He is one of about 100 computer scientists, academics, industry leaders and government officials gathered at a Toronto conference aimed at understanding why interest in computer science and computer engineering programs is dropping across Canada. Research shows 89,000 new IT jobs will be required in Canada in the next three to five years, but universities are only graduating some 3,000 students annually. Between 2002 and 2005, enrolment in IT-related programs fell by 11 per cent. .... http://www.canada.com/edmontonjournal/news/story.html?id=eb17c46f-b6f1-400a-9094-0cf64d0db0f1&k=27999

That brain drain comment doesn't make any sense, forget it.

Perhaps this has to do with the interest in "trades" that do not obsolete themselves so quickly and cannot be outsourced so easily to a cheap labour country.

Perhaps the IT lobby needs to look at itself in more depth rather than "blaming the parents".

Funny, anyone who's been paying attention lately knows the IT industry, and High Tech in general has had a major boost in Alberta. Some of the leaders in Nanotech are here, and the UofA just opened it's Nanotech research centre.

I also blame the fact that kids know names like 'Brittney Spears' but not 'Dean Kamen'; 'Albert Einstien' but not 'Edward Whitten'.

Bah! My kids will learn that Brian May, besides being a member of 'Queen' also has a degree in Astrophysics; 'Mr. Bean/Blackadder' also has a degree in Electrical Engineering'.

Education is just the place to start. The DotBoom also showed us that 'paper' degrees with no experience behind them = trouble.
