Mr. Truly and 10 other former high-ranking officers -- including retired general Anthony Zinni, the former commander of U.S. central command -- raise concerns about the ability of Canada and the U.S. to defend the continent's warming northern sea in a new 63-page report by the Center for Naval Analyses, a private consultant to the U.S. government.
The report details how rising temperatures and ocean levels could present new security challenges to the U.S., and how the military should respond over the next 30 to 40 years.
Its authors said geopolitical upheaval caused by global warming threatens to disrupt oil supplies, create new havens for terrorists, flood American military installations in the Pacific and trigger waves of illegal immigration from Latin America.
The report flagged the Arctic as a "region of particular concern" for the U.S. military because rising temperatures will make the Northwest Passage navigable within a few decades.
Retired admiral Donald Pilling, the former vice-chief of U.S. naval operations, wrote "there is potential for fracturing some very strong alliances based on ... the lack of control over borders."
In particular, Mr. Pilling cited concern that neither the U.S. nor Canada currently has the military capability to handle threats to North America originating in an ice-free Northwest Passage.

If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.

I think it is time that Canada raises a combat ready military of 350 million strong and building a new Canadian Navy with Subs and Aircraft Carriers. Keep them at home rotating them around our borders every season so they get training during all seasons of each area of Canada such as the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Artic doing military exercises and war games as well as along the U.S. Canada border from one end to the other doing border defense, electronic border surveillance, drug trafficking, illegal border crossings, Canadian Air violations, illegal weapons and terrorist defense by sending all they pick up to the terrorist prison north of Ottawa to be process and verified as non terrorists but we don’t include or ask the U.S. Military or U.S. Authorities to participate. Also, we stop sending troops to U.N. hotspots or participating in peace keeping. The reason, we are defending our borders from all hostilities, by committing all our forces and abilities, in our effort to protect the U.S.A. from another Terrorist attack.
Since this is what the U.S. public and the Bush Administration has said it wanted from Canada and Canadian’s there shouldn’t be a problem just support, right?
I would think that there would be a hard line of horror if Canada did this and a different attitude taken.

Canada has "Harmonized" with the USA for decades. If public knowledge don't allow it, then the public is not informed. Actually the Canadian public doesn't care. The NAFTA agreement is only noticed when Americans complain about it. The NAU is already being installed and Canadians don't want to hear about it. Why on earth would the U.S be alarmed?

Ummmmm, last census, there were only 33 Million Canadians. Are we going to employ the flying squirrles again?
