U.S. Forces Fire On Canadian Vehicle In Iraq [Updated]

“A vehicle with four Canadians who are part of our small mission in Baghdad was travelling in the Green Zone. U.S. forces fired on the engine block,” said Pamela Greenwell, a ministry spokeswoman. “Canadian and U.S. authorities are looking into it.” she said. A spokesman for the U.S. military in Baghdad said the incident was caused by the intermingling of two convoys. “There was a U.S. military convoy and then the ambassador's convoy,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Barry Johnson of the combined forces press centre. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060131.ambassador01/BNStory/International/ Update: The incident took place after the Canadians pulled out of the British compound in the Green Zone, a heavily fortified area in the centre of Baghdad where the Iraqi government office and the U.S. military's headquarters are located. The diplomat said the Canadian vehicle – which had a Canadian flag symbol on its dash – waited for a U.S. convoy of five Humvees to pass. Then it followed at a safe distance at about 20 to 25 km/h for about five minutes. She said Canadian officials often share the road with U.S. military vehicles and saw nothing unusual about the situation. Unlike the version offered by the U.S. military, the Canadian diplomat told CBC News that the American convoy had pulled entirely off the road and into a staging area behind a barrier. http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2006/02/01/diplomats060201.html

A Canadian flag synmbol on the dash certainly don't identify it as a Canadian vehicle, let alone one that even Canadians are unaware of,

As usual. Report, report, report then check facts, change report, new facts come in, change report. And ya, what are Canadian diplomats doing in Iraq? And who and what are Canadian diplomats? Do we have some?

    >>They may be trying to secure the release of hostages<<

So far no news from Ottawa as to the role these diplomats are taking. Why the hush, hush? The news media aren't even asking, other then why they had been shot at.

Yes, all's quite on the western front. Who were these people? What was their mission? Did they find out something that the US didn't want leaving the country? Is this just brain damaged military striking out at anyone that passes by? This was apparantly in the Green Zone which is supposed to be a pretty safe area. But then look at how many journalists have been killed in Iraq. The number is astounding compared to past years of war reporting.
