Racism In Canada

Opening with an overview of the incident in which two Canadian Muslims were detained by U.S. authorities, the author argues that:

Canadian news media reported the incident with some mild protest; not because the men's detention was unfair and unreasonable, not because they were prominent members of a Canadian religious community, not even because they were Canadian citizens, but because they were "moderates."

The implication of course is that Canadian Muslims come in other less-palatable varieties, the unspoken term being "extremist." And thus, an entire segment of our country's population still lives under siege, more than two years after 9/11.

Also this week, a new study overviews rates of racial bias in Canada. Among visible minority groups, 20% of respondents said they had been victims of racism.

Well, I do think for the most part Canada is a tolerant country which is more egalitarian than most. But of course, we still have a long way to go! Education, as we know, will help this. But do people in power want a cohesive society, or one where people scapegoat, in a divide and conquer climate?

I agree with you Dave, education is the key, but also agree that the people in power always like someone to pick on. It seems that every time the focus is on them and what they are not doing, they can find some innocent group of people to target, and rally other people to attack also. It also seems to be a human condition to need someone to blame for our problems,it can\'t be just something that happens, it can\'t be our own fault, there must be a scapegoat, as you said.

As someone who has been a victim of racial violence in Canada, I cannot underestimate the fact that racism is alive and well in Canada. I believe that canada has a long way to go before 'visible minorities' can feel themselves to be part of this country.

Ask virtually any minority about racism and they will confirm this, in virtually every part of Canada. The sad thing is that the majority of canadians THINK that canadians are tolerant and unbiased, when clearly the opposite is true. Ask a native and they'll tell you how long its been like that. Heck, white people are even bigoted against people of a different language or religion, or sexual orientation, why is it surprising that they are racist? Read a book on Oka and you'll see just how disgusting canadians can be.

Culturally I find it is far more beneficial to stop denying what virtually every minority tells us-denial is every colonizer's defense. If we grant that we are racist then what do we do about it? That's where a far more beneficial debate takes place, rather than the endless "am not!"
