Canadian Government Says Plan To Harmonize Regulations With U.S. Not A Sovereign

Posted on Monday, March 21 at 10:23 by sthompson
...Part of Smart Regulation will be reaching "consensus standards" with the United States to eliminate myriad small differences in the way Canada and other trading partners regulate products and services, the report says.

It's a major demand by business but a politically sensitive one for a minority Liberal government depending on the centre-left vote to win re-election.

A senior official said regulations can't be regarded as a sovereignty issue, but changes will have to be handled carefully because of political sensitivities. The official said Canada has to differentiate between regulatory differences with the United States that make sense and those that do not...

I have already sent a message to our Government leader and the CFR.org group who si proposing this because it had to be done before the 23 Mar05 when it will I believe get signed into law? But I also mentioned I would be sending them another letter of protest that I would be cc-ing many many others over this outrageous new direction. This should surely come under a 'national referendum' I believe

Ottawa moving to slash red tape: will it take more red tape?

If they can't do something as simple as a gun registry, how can we possibly expect anything out of them such as slashing red tape?

Also if they say that is something is not about sovereignty, then it really sounds like it is about sovereignty. Is it 1984? Of course not.

I would much rather have them fly hot balloons over Canada or go fly kites with Bush.

    Comment - Part 1:

It's so neat the way they present this.

    'Slash red tape'

Well, most Canadians have had bad experiences with that annoting bureaucratic 'red tape', so this must be a good thing, right? Kind of like when HRDC was cutting all sorts of annoying 'red tape' for people some years back, and ended up with lord knows how much money unaccounted for.

'Ottawa is making sweeping changes to the way it regulates Canadian business'

Oh, so this doesn't apply to non-Canadian businesses doing business in Canada. Do we have any 'Canadian' businesses left that this will aid...thought most of them croaked from a nasty attack of Nafta-itetis.

'lagging productivity growth, rapid scientific advances and emerging global juggernauts such as China

Any figures re: 'lagging productivity growth'. Oh, I forgot, we Canadians are all lazy and unproductive...been told that for years so I guess it must be true. Is this the 'fear' ploy again?

    'Smart Regulation action plan'

Yeah, 'Smart' is a catchy name. Guess 'Dumb', 'No', etc. wouldn't have the same ring.

'streamline the regulatory approval process for new drugs, biotechnology and pesticides to harmonize standards, where sensible, with the United States, and to speed up environmental assessments of business projects'

Why does a lot of this leave me a bit nervous...particularly if you replace 'sensible' with 'profitable'? Who determines the meaning of 'where sensible', us or the US?

'Ottawa insists that Smart Regulation is not a deregulation exercise'

    Pardon me?

'it will not cut corners when it comes to the health and safety of Canadians'

Or, I feel much better now. forget my earlier point re: nervousness.

Calumny, I deleted your test, just because you can obviously post now and it was confusing people who were posting trying to discern your wisdom. :) Not censorship, don't worry!

Not that I'm aware of. Don't know where 'test, test' went. Just posted to see if problem was me or something in with a comment I've been trying to make. Seems something in latter part of comment is triggering the SPAM logic.

Gaulois, and Calumny, ALL COMMENTS ARE POSTED AUTOMATICALLY and spam detection software on the site is also AUTOMATIC (ie no people making decisions) and keeps ads etc from being posted here by bots, as has happened in the past. Mods can only delete AFTER something has been posted, and deleting redundant posts that are confusing people as I did above is NOT CENSORSHIP. Plus I can only post so fast due to flood control so explanations take a minute. Read my post above, read my post to the chatterlog, and please lose the paranoia.

We're Canadians...we have to be paranoid.

Sorry everyone, I was just trying to be funny (difficult for me). At no time did I think I was being censored, just have to figure out what phrase is causing the problem.

    I'm working on it.
