U.S. Gives Israel 1 Week Grace Period To Kill With Immunity

Posted on Wednesday, July 19 at 11:23 by Sgt_ShockNAwe
The Bush administration, backed by Britain, has blocked efforts for an immediate halt to the fighting initiated at the UN security council, the G8 summit in St Petersburg and the European foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels. "It's clear the Americans have given the Israelis the green light. They [the Israeli attacks] will be allowed to go on longer, perhaps for another week," a senior European official said yesterday. Diplomatic sources said there was a clear time limit, partly dictated by fears that a prolonged conflict could spin out of control. http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,,1823817,00.html

The victim will be allowed to die and will face the American wrath once Israel is told to stop. The Americans are also blaming Iran and perhaps this will be the excuse needed, to blast that country to smithereens for democracy. Why is it when Dr (Uncle) Sam provides the medicine, its worse then the cure?

I too, am worried this whole thing is a cover to provide justification for war with Iran. It now appears the Israelis captured by Hezbollah were captured IN Lebanon, ie, they were infiltrating the other country's border in deliberate acts of provocation. As soon as they stirred up a reaction, no matter how tiny, they went ballistic with all guns firing.

Relevant to the 1 week grace (that will be much longer) a Globe&Mail "Special Comment" Insider Edition article, unfortunately requiring a subscription to read, entitled "Harper is right on the Mideast" invites comments from Insider readers. At the time of writing there is only 1 reader comment; mine is unpublished, and if recent censor swings at the G&M are indicative it probably will not be published so I am taking the opportunity to present it here and invite intelligent discussion. The line from the original G&M column that precipitated my reply is in quotes on the first line of my reply below.

"Harper is right on the Mideast" G&M article:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060720.wxeharper20/BNStory

My reply (constrained by the G&M 2000 character limit):

A naive and disingenuous article: "It started with an unprovoked attack across a recognized international border".
Look closer and evidence shows Israel started it earlier with kidnappings and various killings; others will refute that pointing to earlier waves of aggression by Hezbollah and so it goes on, like watching waves out to sea - where do the waves start, who started it all? Such a process leads to nothing useful, just endless justification for choosing sides and revenge.

Both sides, Israeli and anti-Israel factions, have been taking pots at each other since 1948 and the ingredients to the current mess can be traced much earlier. There is no white hat and black hat as this article suggests and there never has been.

Hezbollah formed to drive Israel out of Lebanon in the last invasion. In a sense a monster was created. Hezbollah has no political side so Hezbollah has no interest in peace. Israel has no interest in ceasefires or blue helmets when it now has the excuse to pummel Hezbollah and for security reasons invade Lebanon.
Our Prime Minister Stephen Harper, suspiciously quickly, immediately came out on the Israeli side and dismissed the plight of 40,000 Canadians under siege by Israel - "Escalation is inevitable". He has now adopted the "cavalry riding to the rescue" pose in his private jet but it’s a little late. Even now due to his micromanagement, bungling and cap-in-hand stance towards the Israeli blockade plus the lack of realistic contingency planning, only a 100 or so Canadians have actually left Beirut for Cyprus. Let's indulge a conspiracy theory, perhaps this was all orchestrated: first, Iraq is disabled by civil war, second, Syria is weakened and driven from Lebanon by a bombing with overwhelming clues pointing to Syria's door, third, Lebanon is disabled by civil war, fourth, blame for the latter is placed at Iran's door and drumbeats sound. Perhaps Mr. Harper was reading from a script. Time will tell.
The timing of this got me wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that In January UNIFIL was extended until July 31st. After that I guess they leave?

Here is a quip from the article:

The troops are part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and are mandated to confirm and monitor the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, restore international peace and security and assist the Government of Lebanon in ensuring the return of its effective authority in the area.

Most recently, the mandate of UNIFIL was extended until July 31 this year by a UN Security Council resolution of January 31.

The Indian Army has gradually seen the widening of its area of responsibilities. January this year saw the posting of an Indian army contingent at Golan Heights for the first time. A group of 185 officers and troops from India are stationed along with contingents from Canada, Japan, Slovakia, Austria and Poland as part of the UN Disengagement Observers Force (UNDOF).
