"Child poverty is a national shame," New Democrat MP Olivia Chow said at a news conference.
"We have to decide as a country what comes first — is it corporate tax cuts or is it defeating child poverty? You can't do both," she said, adding that in the past six years, corporate tax cuts have cost $56.5 billion in revenue.

18 years ago they were talking about eliminating this by 2000. 7 years later, the situation isn't any better. We therefore elect people who can talk, but can't walk.
Stop it! Bad voters, go to your room!

“Ponerology”: n. division of theology dealing with evil; theological doctrine of wickedness or evil; from the Greek: poneros -> evil'. <br />
<br />
We are not proposing a “theological” study, but rather a scientific study of what we can plainly call Evil. The problem is, our materialist scientific culture does not readily admit that evil actually exists, per se. The lack of such a science has cost humanity millions of lives and untold suffering.<br />

I would like to believe of my self that one of my facets is the Johnny Appleseed of awakening.<br />
As far as solution goes I see that aspect as at least two branches the as they grow more branches develop. The primary two branches are awareness of what is and proaction for positive chance <br />
<br />
On the proaction side <a href="http://www.nlpweekly.com">http://www.nlpweekly.com</a> has many tried and proven strategies for change <br />
Neighbourhood or community driven grass root organisation must be the starting point it is clear in my mind elected officials are not doing what we/I expect of them and the give themselves plum pensions for not serving us., nice racket!<br />

Deregulated western G8 capitalism is built on the impoverishment of the rest of the planet, including children. It was never the purpose of capitalism to improve the lot of the many. 'One out of six children living in poverty in Canada.' How is it that we as a society can tolerate this injustice in one of the richest Countries in the world? Please spare me the 'work hard' and 'personal responsibility' platitudes.
(...and indeed many many politicians have been conning votes from people on this and other 'social' issues for the last two decades -- in fact the last BIG idea from the New Dumbs I heard was some foolish scheme involving 5 billion dollars, a federal program and another middle class entitlement called Daycare masquerading as a child social policy. I believe Chow herself was explaining all of this during the last election -- something about how a national childcare scheme would 'do something' regarding 'child poverty', high cost of food, shrinking wages, regional and ethnic disparities, growing global gap between rich and poor, 'branch plant' economy and corporate absenteeism, etc etc)
2) Expounding a 'new' theology of 'evil' won't do a single thing either as most people have been taught to believe that the 'ends justifying the means'. If one child lives in poverty, then it will produce some 'benefit' for the economy in some capacity. If there are 200,000 homeless in this country, then, while unfortunate for them, the benefit from this 'trickle' down is found in the 'added' value of the real estate market. The fact the 'added' value is relative, speculative, fake and destructive isn't really discussed.
That's our morality; the land that the human walks on is infinitely more valuable to 'some humans' than the human itself.
Politicians and their parties have taken on the role of the media basically -- they don't see themselves as the guardians of the public interest, but just simply a 'mediator' and 'spokesperson' to various corporatist interests.
It's just focus-groups data and political consultants that assemble 'scripts' for 'marketing campaigns' and elections are just meaningless gestures so that the 'Machine' can claim some form of democratic legitimacy, which is how 'western' countries control their subjects.
Folks in western democracies have tons of excuses as to why there is child poverty/death in the Third World; it's just now they have to redeploy those excuses to come up with a cover story as to why their own 'western' countries are sinking into economic collapse.
You are right about the 'individual' responsibilities being a dodge; even when there is poverty in the Third World, then it is usually a case in point where our 'theories' suggest that there is something fundamentally wrong with the economic system in those countries and outfits like the IMF make dramatic demands for changes; if you notice in 'western' countries, poverty is never something that is 'fundamental' requiring wholesale economic changes or even a massive reduction of 'tariff' barriers or subsidies, it is usually explained as an individual choice...the homeless choose to live in the street. Their maximizing their opportunities and actually producing acts of free will and choice.
Virtually all of our moral codes and language are circular logic systems that simply reinforce oppression and inequality it maintains.
Hell when I listen to federal new dumbs I sometimes forget that their provincial counterparts have actually won elections and ran governments, especially in the west. Maybe Chow should go have a chat with Calvert and Doer and find out what went wrong...or even if they are the same political philosophy.

"Symposium on: "The New Zealand Experiment"<br />
A World Model for Structural Adjustment by Jane Kelsey<br />
The Price of Everything - The Value of Nothing<br />
by: Ellen Dannin<br />
Former New Zealand Minister of Finance, Ruth Richardson, has just brought out a book on her work<br />
as architect of the current New Zealand economic structure. The back cover states:<br />
New Zealand is regarded world-wide as the sovereign success story of recent years. With<br />
the combined benefit of the Reserve Bank Act and Ruth Richardson's Fiscal<br />
Responsibility Act, New Zealand, now, in the words of The Economist, ` . . . boasts the<br />
best framework for monetary and fiscal policies anywhere in the world.'<br />
Jane Kelsey, Professor of Law at the University of Auckland, presents another view of the very same<br />
events. Many of us have already heard the Richardson story played out in our individual countries.<br />
Certainly those in the United States, the land of Contract with America, have lived a parallel existence.<br />
What is different about some very similar events in the US and in New Zealand is their respective<br />
starting and ending points and the rapidity of change in both countries. The US has never approached<br />
socialism. In many ways, New Zealand had at least many aspects of state -provision for social needs.<br />
In many ways, it was as close to a workers' paradise as has ever been and remained so for several<br />
generations. Health care was provided by the state. Unemployment was so low the standing joke was<br />
that the prime minister knew both those registered for unemployment. There were no very poor and no<br />
very rich. Union density was the highest in the capitalist world at roughly 50-70%, depending on who<br />
was doing the counting. Life moved at a human pace with leisure and time for community activities,<br />
family, and friends.<br />
The change which began in 1984 in New Zealand is all the more startling as a result. It is as if Chicago<br />
School economists staged a coup d'etat and then installed politicians who claimed to be the Labour<br />
Party as their front. New Zealand is such a small country that ten years of radical reformation,<br />
elimination of trade barriers, privatization, and deregulation have left startlingly visible evidence.<br />
Every aspect of the country has come to resemble the American health care system in terms of cost,<br />
user-friendliness, and equity. Union density, to the extent it can be ascertained now that the<br />
government has stopped keeping statistics that can be better maintained by the private sector, appears<br />
to have dropped to 23%."<br />
My remarks <br />
The relevance of this information is the architect of the New Zealand experiment Sir Roger Douglas’ plan found a home here ins Canaduh<br />
BC Alta Ont and Que all implemented similar plans and Harper is only the latest adherent of the Chicago school <br />
<br />
I see the large part of our “problem” is we expect education to come only from schools<br />
It don’t! <br />

<br />
Let me tell you an important story as briefly as I can...
In early 2002 I, a divorced single mother with 2 children,who was very financially comfortable and perfectly able to support myself and my children with a monthly income of approximately $6,000 a month and no debt and approximately $150,000 in savings and investments, that had just bought a $50,000 SUV and had just qualified for a mortgage to buy my 5th home and had just taken my family on a day 10 Christmas vacation to Florida, etc...you get the picture, then was severely injured, along with my 2 children, by a Canadian health professional and then we were abandoned without care and intentionally denied the emergency treatment we required to treat our severe injuries and in fact denied assistance of any kind and harassed and threatened by the Alberta and Federal government as part of a cover up. I then was forced to travel with my children to St. Paul, Minnesota approximately once a month for a week at a time for 3 years for Phase 1 treatment to treat the severe injuries caused to my children and I by a Canadian health professional, as clearly reported in reports written by several health professionals to be fact based on objective diagnostic testing.
Despite providing all the reports and records and evidence to support this to be fact, the Alberta government and the Canadian Federal government refused to assist my children and I in any way and instead continued to harrass and threaten my children and I, as the evidence proves, including telling us that if my children went to the U.S. regularly for the treatment they desperately need to treat their severe injuries caused by a Canadian health professional, then the Alberta public school system would fail my sons for missing school for treatment, regardless of any efforts they made to complete the work they missed and regarless of them passing their final exams, with no consideration for the circumstances, forcing me, a severely injured woman, to have to home school my seriously injured sons, with no help or support of any kind, but again continued harrassment and threats, including the Alberta government subjecting my children and I to a seriously fraudulent and abusive child protection investiagation that the evidence supports was based on their saying I was too injured by medical malpractice to take care of my sons, and threatening us not to file a lawsuit.
Then we filed a lawsuit, including all the undeniable clear evidence supporting it, only to be further harassed and threatened and denied justice by CGI, a company significantly involved with government in Canada and that represents the financial interests of most, if not all Canadian insurance companies, and by the justice system and government system involved with CGI, to obstruct justice and deny my children and I, Canadian citizens justice, that has gone on for more than 4 years without help from anyone in the government despite all the evidence to prove it.
When my savings ran out, I applied for CPP disability to help me and my sons survive what has been done to us,and was further harrassed by CGI who have more than 3000 employees working in the government department that handles applications for CPP disability, and despite clearly qualifying according to an independent review tribunal panel, and manditorily paying into CPP for these benefits, CGI still took over writing the final report and making the final decision so again my sons and I were denied the help and support we are entitled to because of the corruption involving CGI.
My sons then were referred to Phase 2 treatment in Toronto, since we continued to be denied treatment in Alberta and B.C. etc..., and flew there once a month for a week at a time for treatment for over 2 years, until CGI once again interferred and we were abandoned as patients, left still desperately needing treatment after spending over $300,000 for treatment costs alone, most of which was paid by my ex-husband/sons'father, with not a penny coming from the government in Canada despite all the records and reports proving we were severely injured and desperately need this treatment to survive and while even greater efforts were made to obstruct justice and deny my sons and I justice, including CGI and their lawyer and the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta in Calgary conspiring together to attempt to have me wrongfully committed into a forensic maximum security psychiatric facility to cover up what has been done to my sons and I and their criminal misconduct, which we have the evidence to prove.
And this is just a small part of what has been done to us and my sons and I now are currently living in the basement of a family member's home, homeless and penniless and owing $50,000 for treatment that was never even completed, and while we are being denied any help from the government and being denied the treatment we still desperately need to recover and while CGI continues to harass and threaten us and obstruct justice and while the Court of Queen's Bench in Calgary continues to assist them and deny my sons and I justice despite all the indisputable evidence proving what has been so horrifically done to us.
My point being that education is by far not the only problem because when the system is so seriously corrupt no one is safe from ending up homeless and penniless like my precious children and myself...so expect the numbers to start growing in leaps and bounds as CGI's seriously corrupt take over of our country continues.
Canadians need to stop thinking this is someone else's problem and realize it could happen to them if they don't wake up and get involved and fight the very serious corruption that clearly exists in our government and in our country. What my sons and I are experiencing today, could be your experience tomorrow as long as CGI is controling our lives and all our private and personal information held by the government, and our government, our legal system, Canadian law enforcement, our national security, and our country, etc...
As it is there is no justice, if there were cases like yours would have not got to the point they have. What there is is a crap shoot where a large enough percentage are allowed to become winners so the rest of the suckers continue to play the rigged game.<br />

I just wanted to make the point that it is not just the uneducated that are struggling in our country, I think you understand, as I understand your point and totally agree with it. Because that makes it easy for the rest to think it's not their problem and doesn't affect them, which is not reality.
If I survive what is being done to me and my sons, which I am doing everything in my power to do, you can count on me to be out there doing my part to educate and inform others as much as I possibly can about what I have learned.
I wish there were something I could do to assist you in your plight
