We've Moved To The New Server!

Posted on Saturday, December 27 at 10:26 by Jesse
I just started the process of moving vive over to the shiny new server; with any luck, we won't have any downtime and the switch will be transparent. If something does go wrong however, vive may go offline for a short time. I'll do my best to ensure that nothing goes wrong; if you do notice a problem, please email me at jvanherk@superfastninja.com with details on the problem. Thanks for your patience!

UPDATE! If you can see this, we're successfully on the new server! Be amazed at the Super Fast Speed!

Can it handle a good slashdotting? :) I've put a link to Vive in my sig over at K5, and was going to do so for /.
Kudos!

---
"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain

Surviving a slashdotting is one of my goals; though the only way to truly know if it can handle that many hits (I figure about 250/s) is to try it. I'm much more confident in its survivability on the new server than on the old one.

For those that are interested, the server is a 2.16GHz(overclocked, hehe) P4 with 1Gig of RAM and a massive hard drive. It's located in Co-location with a high-speed burstable network connection. It's running Debian linux with apache 1.3, PHP, and a MySQL backend. I've tweaked the apache settings so that it can better handle massive amounts of traffic. The old server was doing some weird proxy forwarding things, which were probably a performance hit; the new site is as straightforward as possible.

From the above, you can see that most of the usual bottlenecks have been removed from the equation. The only thing that probably can't handle extreme traffic load is the MySQL backend. With some apache caching(made possible by removing a bit of the dynamic stuff from vive's pages), that shouldn't be much of a problem. :)

Summary: I think it can survive many hundred of thousands of hits a day, yes. :)

---
JvH

Speaking of Slashdot - as this site grows, a challenge will be keeping the signal to noise ratio reasonable. Best to start planning now for some Slashdot-like form of peer moderation of comments...

I agree that we'll need some sort of comment moderation, eventually. I think we might go with something more like Kuro5hin instead of slashdot... but it'll probably be some custom-made thing that really only makes sense to whoever wrote it. ;)
Speaking of which, if anyone feels like coding such a thing, we'd love for you to do so! If you're a decent PHP coder and would like to help add features to vive, email me!.
---
JvH

Slashcode and Scoop are both supposed to be easy to configure. gauntlet.ca is another example of a Scoop site. Satanosphere is another example of Slashcode.
The last thing I programmed was a single chip microcontroller in machine language. :(

---
"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain

the geeklog code is way better than slashcode in a lot of ways, and I would hate to switch just for moderation.

The last thing I programmed was pong. ;)
