Canada Wants Pakistan Suspended From Commonwealth

The 53-nation Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting opens Friday and the fate of Pakistan is expected to overshadow the proceedings. The Commonwealth gave Musharraf a Thursday deadline to essentially end the state of emergency he imposed Nov. 3 and restore his country's constitution. Reports out of Pakistan indicate that Musharraf may step down as head of the army on Saturday, which has the potential to delay a decision by the Commonwealth. Removing his army uniform and standing down as general had been a key demand of the Commonwealth. Canada's junior foreign affairs minister Helena Guergis is representing Canada at the meeting.
