Canada Now Seems Out Of Step On Afghanistan

In the media, there is an unseemly, almost gleeful, quality to much of the coverage — even the coverage of death. It's as if, after years of staying on the sidelines, Canada has finally made it into the big leagues. All of this is reminiscent of America immediately after that country invaded Iraq in 2003. Then, too, there was flag-waving, much optimism and the usual bold statements. ("We don't cut and run. We don't start fights, but we finish them.") But now, almost four years later, the U.S. is finally beginning to come to its senses. Canadian fans of the current Kandahar mission might pay attention to what Americans have discovered about their post 9/11 military adventures in both Iraq and Afghanistan. First, they have learned war is no fun. The U.S. death toll from Iraq continues to mount. And yet, as the U.S. government's own intelligence agencies noted in a recently declassified report, American efforts there have not lessened the threat of terrorism — they have made it worse. To put it another way, by the time America eventually pulls out of Iraq, hundreds of U.S. soldiers and thousands of Iraqis will have died for nothing. http://tinyurl.com/k58eg

Mackenzie King may have been an odd duck but Harper rolls in it.

Not as long as Bush is in power. He defies "come to it's senses". Harper will retain the same tradition. Harper like Bush, has to do what he can before he can't. Harper has some catching up to do, with Bush. The Americans have killed many of their own already and Bush may be gone before Harper. Harper is concerned he may be out before Bush, IF Canadians come to their senses.

If the current naval build up in the Persian Gulf indicates and imminent attack on Iran, the debate over whether or not to pull out of Afghanistan will be nothing more than a faint memory. All hell will break loose in the Middle East and our troops will be right in the middle of it. I think the US is intent on war with Iran before the end of the current administration's term.

Iran is not easy pickings. North Korea is not easy pickings. George want's glory but hasn't the power. He want's support. NATO countries are backing down on Afghanistan. Americans do not like to be defeated and especialy defeated in the wars they started. The American people do not want their country to loose face. BUT they would be so ever pleased to have won a big one. They glory the Alamo when they stole part of Mexico at their own Peril. They glory their history when their forefathers slaughtered the Indians.
Perhaps it's just a case of convincing the American voters that they can win this one. Bush would love to end his term in a blaze of glory.
