American Student Voted Illegally In Election

He was able to cast a ballot in Toronto's Trinity-Spadina riding with only his student card and a hydro bill as identification -- proving his residency, but not his nationality or his age. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20060126/illegal_voting_060126/20060126/ Note: something to think about, this person came forward and made it public, did any others also vote and not declare it?

He should be arrested and charged under Section 3 of the Canada Elections Act just like any other criminal. We don't want the US Ambassador telling us how to run our country and we sure don't need a student that we allowed to enter our country breaking Canadian laws. Yankee Go Home

Alas, this is another example of what our government wants- chaos and corruption. So much easier this way to commit treason and line their pockets as they sell out Canada.

Geesh people, the guy did us a huge favour! And this is the thanks he gets?

He did us a favour? That is like thanking someone for breaking into your house because now you know you need a better lock! I think this shows us that our electoral system is flawed in a very bad way, there are many parts to the system which are flawed but this one could be corrected quite easily. How many non-citizens voted in this election but didn't expose themselves? How much influence does another country have on the outcome of our 'democratic process'? Another part of the system which I believe is flawed is that you can be a dual citizen and still run for MP. When a dispute arises which country will you stand for?

I have to agree with Catherine and bmac here, though I’d say that a period of probation (perhaps until he receives his degree) would be the proper sentence in the case of a guilty verdict, given his stated intent and confirmation of his ballot having been spoilt.

The rôle of a guest shouldn’t be to seek out flaws in his host’s household — unless his host has requested that he do so.

Another part of the system which I believe is flawed is that you can be a dual citizen and still run for MP. If the dispute cause a MP to break the oath, then pursue the appropriate legal means of redress for having broken the oath — regardless of whether the MP has multiple citizenships or not. Multiple citizenship itself, I think, would be irrelevant; whether or not the oath was kept is the important part.

---
Shatter your ideals upon the rock of Truth.
It's NOTHING like that and you know it, in life there are no analogies-it is what it is. If HE hadn't done it we wouldn't know about it. In case you missed it he SPOILED his ballot, so in fact he DIDN"T really vote (though he could be lying-but so what, one vote didn't make a bit of difference). Laws are all fine and lord knows we've got plenty of stupid ones (in fact 'regular' canadians can be arrested just for spoiling their ballot, in effect making criminals out of anybody who wants to make ANY kind of political gesture).

Now this got media attention so something will be done. If we had more 'criminals' like this guy we'd know a hell of a lot more about all atrocious bureaucratic blunders our government commits. Keep in mind that elections canada are always touting internationally about their 'respect' and how well they run elections. Thank heavens for this guy, if it had been discovered 'underground', just think how many conservatives might have made the trip up to the country and voted. Rosa Parks was a 'criminal' too. I'll keep searching on this topic because if he IS fined, I'll pay it myself.

In case you also missed it, he was volunteering at a polling station-which is a hell of a lot more than most canadians ever bother doing-almost half can't even be bothered to vote!

Ib gotta comment on this one!
Becausei have been trained to look for the "learning" and preserve it for future reference I see what the student did much the same way as Marcarc
A flaw inour system has been discovered and there appears no intent toward personal gain was employed, therefore ...
    No penalty no foul.

    Well said Marcarc!

Something similar could also be tried in the USA in federal or state elections or city elections or school board elections. The forms used here do not say that one has to be a US citizen (it is just assumed !!), and all this is required is a valid driver's license as identification.

And, as we all know, they cannot count.

The best in the world is likely New Zealand, where immigrants can vote without citizenship. The Kiwis think that if they work there and live there, why not?
