Can't Get No Satisfaction: BC Voters Battered By BC Liberal Majority

Posted on Thursday, May 19 at 10:51 by PatriotPete
Happy is Gordon Campbell that in his own riding of Van- Pt. Grey he just managed to "squeak in" with 10,612 votes, while Mel Lehan of the NDP received 8,650, and the Greens got 3453. Indeed, why the progressives in that riding could not have somehow come together to defeat Gordon Campbell at least in that one riding is a lamentable question deserving an answer from both NDP Leader Carole James and Green Party Leader Adriane Carr. To that last paragraph - screw that. There is zero need to joing the Greens and NDP or to have one step down for the other in any riding. Tens of thousands only voted NDP to get rid of the Liberals. If peopel were more willing to vote for who they wanted vs who they didn't want but voted for anyways - ala - vote blocking, BC would be a different place today.

It is time for electoral reform. A majority with 46%? Over 10% without ANY representation? I would be more worried about that.

...the risk of vote splitting in key ridings was well known
...and as the polls forecast a very close race in many
ridings...it would have been worth a try, even in one
    riding, Campbell's riding..

...when I say 'electoral accord'...I mean an accord that
would have benefited both the NDP & Greens
electorally, would have meant coming together on
some platform points where they agree, like No to oil &
gas exploration, no to uranium mining, no to
dismantling park boundaries, no more fish farm
expansion & perhaps a move to closed pen technology
or moving on -land, no to union & business
contributions to political parties, yes to a fully restored
Ministry of the Environment, yes, to Women Centres,
yes...to many things that we might find in
common...NOT just the differences between the
    parties.

....anyways I'm sure there are many in BC, NDP'ers and
Greens, and members of other smaller parties too,
who "Can't Get no Satisfaction"....including STV
supporters. One thing I agree with, we need pro-rep
badly in BC/Canada, but STV is not my preferred
system, some form of MMP has been found to work
better in most countries of the world- excepting Ireland
and Malta which are the lands of STV.

An electoral accord would have made sense in light of the first-past-the-post system. Why the NDP and Greens didn't think about that is another matter. At any rate, resistance to the neocons will now have to return to the extra-parliamentary format. With the next election 4 years off the excuse of "we can't frighten potential NDP voters" shouldn't have much credibility. I predict a hot time in BC, and I am not talking about global warming.

    Anarcho, you're right on...until there is a pro-rep
system...and where we have only a FPTP system...it
makes sense for parties to form an accord to not only
defeat the neo-con, sell-outs of Steven Harper, & the
BC Fiberals, but to make an accord to bring in pro-rep
once they, via their accord, are in a position to
govern...thereafter no need for 'electoral accords'...then
they can make agreements to co-operate with the
    Legislature or Parliament. (Pete Dimitrov)

I've said it before(possiably not here) that the voter system is prejudiced.
One question I have is :How in the hell does a party that has bilked ALL Canadians manage to stay in power? I say don't let the MPs decide. They are all crooked anyway.Let Canada decide if it wants a party that continually screws us out of millions of dollars(Adscam,Gomery Inquiry).
Boy,I wish I had a job like that!

The Greens thought about electoral co-operation with the NDP to a
signifcant degree. In June 2003, Green candidate Ian Gregson asked Joy
MacPhail to co-operate in 2005. Her answer was "why should we deceive
    the voters this way?".

As long as the NDP definition of cooperation is "here is your
membership form, please complete and return", the Greens and NDP
    will never
cooperate. The Greens are not going away and if the NDP want to defeat
the Liberals using FPTP they better learn to cooperate with the Greens.

Or we could get MMP passed and deal with minority coalitions after the
    fact.

Hey Anon,..but do you know if any direct, person to
person meetings ever took place between Carole
James & Adriane Carr...that is the question that
remains unanswered, if you don't know - who knows?

I think this is a valid point, but nonetheless a significant number of NDPers are very sectarian toward the Greens, so it wouldn't be too unlikely that they do not want to cooperate. I think it needs to be pointed out - without branding all the members for sure - that an authoritarian streak runs thru the NDP and this needs to be combatted. Essentially, the authoritarian social democrats think they ought to be in charge and nobody else. It is a mirror image of the authoritarian right.

Crankster, the answer to your question. The PUBLIC is stupid. The public does not care.
The election results in BC proove that.It is also a clear signal to all politicians that they can do whatever they want.
Martin will get a majority next time around.
You always get the government you deserve.BC deserves Campbell.

We need to kick these psuedo Communists out of power and force them to return to Constitutional law instead of this Communist drivel they support. Shame on us for allowing it to happen.
