Our Canada Project Launched

Posted on Wednesday, March 31 at 10:30 by sthompson
The Project -- an unprecedented initiative of 25 major environmental, women’s, labour, student, arts, and social justice organizations –- released polling sponsored by The Council of Canadians and The Polaris Institute. The polling shows that Canadians in overwhelming numbers support peace-keeping over joint combat operations with the United States, and reject President Bush’s “Star Wars” program.

“The Our Canada Project says the upcoming election is going to be a watershed. We can either move closer to the Bush Administration or we can embrace our great Canadian traditions of compassion, peace-keeping, and environmental stewardship,” said John Doherty, Chair of the Board of Greenpeace Canada, one of the groups signing the Our Canada declaration.

The Our Canada Project represents the first major intervention by citizens’ groups in the upcoming federal election. “While the Project is non-partisan, we urge voters to use the ballot box to affirm Canada’s position as a peace-maker, defender of universal social programs, and champion of human rights”, said Maude Barlow, Chair of The Council of Canadians, one of the signatory groups.

Also speaking at the launch: Father Paul Hansen and Sara Stratton (KAIROS), Paul Moist (CUPE), and Heather Allin (ACTRA).

The next step is to convince our politicians that the majority of the people that live in this beautiful country want to keep it Canadian, and with little interference from the US or any other country.

This is going to be a hard sell, but if the politicians are swamped with letters, emails, and phone calls, along with dumping a crapload of documents on our local MP and MPP or MLA, then maybe someday, the sheer workload of reading these documents will convince them that the majority has a say in the direction the country takes.

It's our bloody country, not theirs to play with. It's not a toy, like Belinda would like to think, it belongs to the people.

This is a great initiative, and hopefully will sway some opinions in Ottawa.

My question is does this initiative intend to back a particular party that best represents the interests stated, or seek to form a political party of its own?

I know this is a new creation, but is there plans for a website to discuss possible courses of action?

    This is good news.

I don't really think the government gives a fly fig however. After seeing the joint RCMP, OPP, border security, and then some US spokespersons in a news conference today touting the advantages of integrated policing,(over and over), I don't think anyone is going to listen to what joe canadian wants for Canada. What they were doing there was soooooo transparent that for a skeptic like me it was propaganda pure and simple.

I don't remember ever seeing a news conference of this nature before? Since when do our law enforcement agencies have to come onto the news media to tell us what good boys they are? 400 of them jointly working together to get all the really bad ecstacy/marijuana dealers. In my mind if they feel the need to do this it's an indication they're preparing us for a policed state and integration.

If this project included motherhood and apple pie it would have covered all the bases! duh. Poll anyone, ask them if Peacekeeping or Warfighting operations are more preferable, and, big surprise, they'll say Peacekeeping!. Ask them if we should destroy the environment or save it, hmmmm, that's a tough one, save it? good answer! Sorry, but it's hard not to be cynical when interest groups and spin doctors are hard at work trying to blow sunshine up my trousers.

Very true what you say. Emails, phone calls, pressuring, is a good start. Puts the government on the defensive, and when they don't respond it will galvanize Canadians to take more action. Protests, rallies, real political movements are what we need at this point. These corporatists nearly have thier hands around the neck of the country and are about to squeeze. We have organize as many people as fast as possible to mobilize as much of the country as we can for the next election. I'm very glad these wonderful, Canadian organizations are pointed in the same direction and are aware of the situation. But it is that vast majority of Canadians that must be shown that there is something THEY CAN DO. There is a lot of frustration in this country and it is going to spill over soon.
