As the early pioneers in modern medicine found penicillin, cures for tuberculosis, plagues, and numerous other critical illnesses, we assume they felt tremendous joy and relief that human suffering would be reduced, that children would no longer die at birth, or mothers during the birthing process. We consider the modern world of health so advanced, that in fact illness, should be nearly wiped out and that our quality of life should be optimum. So why isn’t it? Why do we see increased numbers of children suffering from obesity, to the point that childhood diabetes is at an alarmingly high rate, that teens are having heart attacks, and cancer continues to thrive in North American, and children are starving, dying of AIDs, water pollution related illnesses in the Third World? Why are young children developing reproductive cycles, prior to the expected age of puberty? Why are so many Canadians using anti-depressants, sleeping pills, and diet pills?
The people of the planet went from helpless victims, to critically ill with a chance of survival, to hopeful patients, to healthy, educated people and as that became evident as a pattern for the people of the world, something had to change. When the field of medicine became more of an industry than a discipline or calling, and profit and shareholders dictate the direction of medicine, we became victims all over again. Any good business person will tell you that if you want to be successful, you must find a market and fill it. But if there is no market, you must create it.
This is evident in the push for two-tiered healthcare in Canada. If the system was not broken, it would never need the private sector to fix it. If people are healthy, they will not need pharmaceuticals; and there goes the market with its profits! If you don’t believe there is money in illness, go to your local pharmacy and pick any illness you want, (never mind the drugs available by prescription) now look at how many drugs are available for whatever ails you. Cold medicine, gas medicine, skin tonics, eye irritation solutions, etc.; not only will you find many products, you will need application tools, bandages, droppers, special scissors and tape, and so on. Before you buy your over the counter medication, read the instructions, side effects and contraindications. Now every time you need a prescription drug, read the side effects etc that are included, or when you hear a new drug advertised on television, listen to the side effects. (Many will say something like this: ‘may cause nausea, vomiting, headaches, or drowsiness, should not be taken with such-and-such, and consult your doctor before using, ask your doctor about this medication, and don’t forget, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems’) The last one always makes me laugh, ‘ya, doc, I did a little test this morning and suspect I have a problem with my liver.’
Much of the population has become more educated and aware of health risks in our environment, our food and medications. Rather than our government ensuring that those areas of our lives are made safer with new technology, they are creating legislation that contributes to an unhealthy environment, and keeps us dependent on pharmaceuticals, by reducing our choices. It is my contention that, to complain that the healthcare system is unsustainable, while at the same time assist in creating an environment that, is unhealthy at best, is a paradox indeed.
What do I mean by "assist" in creating that unhealthy environment? The government of Canada, through Bill C-28 an Act to Amend the Food and Drugs Act, is not protecting the people, they are promoting an industry. I quote from The Hill Times, April 25,2005, Guest Column, Michael McBane(the National coordinator of the Canadian Health Coalition www.medicare.ca)
“With all eyes on the Gomery Inquiry,the Government of Canada is sneaking a very nasty piece of legislation through Parliament. Bill C-28, an Act to Amend the Food and Drugs Act, will accelerate the adulteration of Canada’s food supply with cancer-causing chemicals, pesticides, food additives and veterinary drugs like growth hormones and antibiotics. During second reading debate the Parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Health, Robert Thibault, told the House not to worry, the bill is “not related to food safety,” but is a “technical” matter. Mr.Thibault added that C-28 is “in line with the ongoing intent of the Government of Canada’s smart regulation initiative.” He added that the bill: “will support ongoing work under the North American Free Trade Agreement Technical Working Group on pesticides.”
Along with Canada’s ties to various treaties and trade agreements including NAFTA, WTO we become tied to CODEX regulations. Bill C420 is an attempt to stop the CODEX recommendations from becoming the law of the land, which would prevent the public from buying alternative medicines including vitamins, minerals etc, and/or at the very least make them by prescription only and at very low doses, thereby removing their therapeutic effects. At the time of this writing, July 17,2005, I am unable to ascertain the outcome of Bill C420, it is my understanding that it made it to second reading, but it would require third reading and Royal Assent to become law.
This quote is taken from , ‘The Basics On Codex by Helke Ferrie, March 2005
“Codex can dictate its guidelines to Health Canada because HC is subject to all the food rules of Codex, as of 1995, when Canada became a WTO member state. Both Codex and Canada are also members of the World Trade Organization and Codex can enforce Canadian compliance by going to the WTO court. Canada can do the same and take anybody else to the WTO if they perceive anti-competitive activity with regard to imported food or food exported from Canada. How that works is easily verified by going to the WTO website or by getting a summary from Council of Canadians whose website provides all the details on these trade rules. The purpose of Codex in general, since its establishment in the early 1960’s, is facilitation of food trade. Other sub-committees of Codex deal with related issues, such as rules for packaged foods, labeling of packaged foods, maximum residues of this and that in packaged foods, or on fresh foods, and so on.”
A very good analysis of this situation can be found at http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chris/2005/03/10health_canada_bull_on_codex.htm
Another: http://www.newswithviews.com/guest_opinion/guest60.htm
There are unlimited sources on this issue, and yet most health food stores that I have contacted, are unaware of this threat. Most people who use vitamins and minerals are unaware of this threat to their way of life. Health Canada, the Health Minister and those behind the Smart Regulations Plans don’t seem willing to respond to my requests for clarification. If our government continues to allow unsafe products on the market and reduce alternative health sources from consumer’s choices, we will inadvertently become more dependent on the health system.
It is my understanding that government’s role in our lives is to govern in such a manner as to create safe, viable communities, to protect the public, to enhance the environment so that it can sustain human life, in harmony with other species on the planet. As Canada still reels from the impact of BSE, our government wants to allow (Bill C-28)--the use of six hormones. I quote again from Michael McBane, of Canadian Health Coalition: ‘Health Canada approved the use of six hormones used in beef production that are banned in the EU: estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, trenbolone, zeranol, and melengestrol acetate. According to the EU’s Scientific Committee on Veterinary Measures Relating to Public Health: “no threshold levels can be defined for any of the six substances.” Estradiol is linked to DNA damage, early puberty among girls, and breast cancer in women.The human epidemiological studies point to estradiol as a carcinogen adding approximately three per cent breast cancer risk per year of estrogen exposure. The EU asked the WTO for Canada to supply the risk assessment data upon which Health Canada determined that these six hormones banned in Europe are in fact safe for human consumption.’
We know that Europe will not trade in our cattle because of the use of hormones, the people of Canada do not want these hormones used in their food and yet our government still allows them to be used! Who does government work for? Trade deals which influence health standards, that create dependency on an industry, are detrimental to the quality of life of human beings, and prevent the people from having choices with regard to their health, are not in the best interest of the people. Full consultation with the public is promoted on the government of Canada’s website, and yet the majority of people are unaware of the issues, and those who are, do not seem able to get information, nor are their opinions seemingly considered. As long as our governments are influenced by corporate profit margins, and are not held accountable by the people of their respective countries, we will not have a good quality of life. We must ask ourselves who pays for these trade deals, drug laws, and decisions? Who incurs the illness, who pays for the healthcare costs? There used to be a saying, ‘he who pays the piper calls the tune’, isn’t it time that we started calling the tune? There is definitely a war going on, and the truth, indeed, is the first casualty!

And all these anti-depression pills...my goodness! Since when did people stop knowing that it is ok to be depressed about something. It's normal. Sometimes life isn't perfect, and you deal with it. You don't pop a stupid pill. I really don't understand the logic. And I know far too many people taking them. It's like drinking to forget your problems, only it doesn't go away, and it never will until the problem is dealt with. <br />
<br />
The same with ADHD and ADD. Geez, give the kids the pills. How about feeding them proper food and getting them to be active outside. That would solve most of the problems.<br />

But no, don't use logic.<br />

At a conference in Montreal, social scientists and feminists set out to dispel the myths of Female Sexual Dysfunction <br />
BY NICOLE COHEN <br />
<br />
MONTREAL -- It's fitting that a conference on sexual politics begins with an image that circulated after George W. Bush's re-election last November: an illustrated map of North America with the blue states swallowed by the "United States of Canada" and the red states renamed "Jesusland." <br />
<br />
Conference organizer Leonore Tiefer shows the re-imagined map, reflecting on the political climate in the US for women's sexual health and setting the tone for the weekend's talks. "Things are difficult down below," she says, "in more ways than one."<br />
<br />
Though some of those difficulties -- the threats to abortion rights and problems with Washington-funded abstinence-only education -- are on the agenda, the focus of the conference held last weekend in Montreal's Le Nouvel Hotel, titled Women and the New Sexual Politics: Profits vs. Pleasures, is the over-medicalization of women's sexual health and how Big Pharma constructed a disorder called Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD), from which it stands to make big profits.<br />
<br />
It's been five years since the pharmaceutical industry began racing to develop a new drug for women's sexual problems that could, like Viagra did in 1998, penetrate a billion-dollar market fuelled by insecurity, anxiety and misconceptions about sex. And it's been five years since the New View campaign was launched by Tiefer, a professor of psychiatry at the New York University medical school, and a group of social scientists, feminists, therapists and activists. The New View critiques the medical model of sexual problems and relocates women's sexuality in broader social and cultural contexts.<br />
<br />
They argue that FSD is a myth, generated by pseudo-science, misleading research and marketing that purports to offer women -- using language co-opted from the women's movement -- choice. They say these problems are not properly understood and drugs in development are potentially unsafe and unnecessary. They accuse the medical-industrial complex of first inventing the cure, then the disease.<br />

The Vitamin Wars -<br />
The Battle Intensifies<br />
By Ralph Fucetola, JD <br />
Vitamin Lawyer.com <br />
7-20-5<br />
<br />
INTRODUCTION <br />
<br />
July 2005 produced several international regulatory challenges that will heavily impact the nutrient industry and alternative healing. As one observer's blog put it, "Pro-Illness forces are pushing hard to consolidate their gains at CODEX last week when the Vitamin and Mineral Guideline (VMG) was passed without any dissenting voices." <br />
<br />
The battle has just begun. Read more below about how you can help and the Vitamin Lawyer's Industry Support Program (ISP) <br />
<br />
More up to date info on Codex and related health freedom issues can be found at <a href="http://www.healthfreedomusa.org">http://www.healthfreedomusa.org</a>, <a href="http://www.thenhf.com">http://www.thenhf.com</a> and <a href="http://www.iahf.com">http://www.iahf.com</a>. <br />
<br />
I've been on two web radio shows on this issue in the past week or so - <a href="http://www.rense.com">http://www.rense.com</a> and <a href="http://www.thebyteshow.com">http://www.thebyteshow.com</a>. More information is available through my <a href="http://www.vitaminlawyernews.com">http://www.vitaminlawyernews.com</a> and <a href="http://www.inhere.org">http://www.inhere.org</a>. <br />
<br />
WHAT'S HAPPENING - WHAT TO DO! <br />
<br />
My take on this all is that both the threat to freedom of choice and the opportunity to turn around the international agencies are at the highest levels they've been in years. <br />
<br />
A new anti-vitamin bill has been introduced in the House, HR 3156, but several pro-freedom congresspeople are also getting involved (see Rep. Ron Paul's web site, for example). <br />
<br />
Contact your congresspeople to oppose HR 3156. <br />

<br />
In recent weeks the EU high court upheld the very restrictive (treats dietary supplements like toxins!) Food Supplement Directive (EU regulation) BUT, according to the Alliance for Natural Health attorneys, limited its application to synthetic supplements, not natural dietary substances, thereby alleviating some concern about those rules. <br />
<br />
Also, the Codex committee adopted similarly restrictive guidelines (the VMG - Vitamin and Mineral Guidelines), but, the "upper limits" are still in dispute and Codex's parent orgs, WHO and FAO have told Codex to "review its mandate" and consider how nutrition and supplements can help health - something it has tried to avoid so far. <br />
<br />
The central issue here seems to be the clash between international bureaucracies regarding what "science based" approach to take regarding dietary supplements. We know the choice that was made in the US, when Congress unanimously adopted DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act) in 1994: Dietary Supplements are FOODS and are not subject to toxic material (drug) controls. This also needs to be the choice made at the international level. Currently, Codex (the international Food Code) treats Dietary Supplements as though they were toxic substances, seeking to use the science of toxicology to determine upper limits. This is just junk science and will result in upper limits so low as to be ineffective as nutrition. The proper science to use to determine possible adverse effects is the science of Nutrition. <br />
<br />
WHAT TO EXPECT <br />
<br />
What are the practical results of this distinction? Under the Codex toxicology model, for example, Vitamin C upper limits are set so low as to merely prevent the deficiency disease, scurvy (about 60 mg daily). However, the metabolic role of Vitamin C is much, much more important than just preventing scurvy. The amount of C that a healthy person needs, according to Nutritional Science, for optimal health, is several grams a day (2 to 3,000 mg a day). <br />
<br />
Thus we are fighting for continued access to effective levels of nutrients. Many people believe we are fighting for our lives. <br />
<br />
I was not sure about this, so I decided to try an experiment. After 30 years of faithful daily high dose vitamin taking, I stopped, about June 21st. By July 10th I was feeling so ill, with numbness in my fingertips, out of breathe, unable to concentrate, and uncomfortable heart palpitations, that I ended the one month experiment early and started taking my supplements again. Within about 48 hours I was feeling normal. Now I know what I'm fighting for. If I'm ever deprived of the nutrients I've been taking, it is the same as a death sentence. I know what I'm fighting for. Do you? <br />
<br />
THE CHALLENGE <br />
<br />
The challenge is this: the large nutrient companies are either owned by pharma interests, or soon will be. They will not support freedom of choice efforts. Only the small and struggling nutrient companies - like those to which this email is being sent - have the true incentive to support the various groups I've discussed in this email. <br />
<br />
I've intentionally limited my law practice over the past year or so to just advising nutrient companies and alternative practitioners and institutions. I am willing to devote myself full time to defending the nutritional world. What I need to do is generate funding for these efforts. I am working with a number of nonprofits and we are putting together Industry Support Program to get the industry to support greater efforts by the Vitamin Lawyer in conjunction with pro-freedom forces. More about ISP in a later email. <br />
<br />
NEXT STEPS <br />
<br />
This is war! When we ask for YOUR help, will you be ready to give it? The detailed proposal we will be making will be for regular monthly support for the efforts to Defend DSHEA. Consider it part of your public relations budget. The companies will get up-to-the-minute information about market developments and a strong voice advocating their interests, which are the interests of their customers: ready access to high quality, high dose, nutrients. <br />
<br />
I'll be contacting you individually over the next couple weeks regarding the ISP. In the meantime, please circulate this email and let me know if you are ready to support these efforts. <br />

Teens buying legal psychedelic herb, police warn<br />
Last Updated Thu, 21 Jul 2005 15:12:31 EDT <br />
CBC News<br />
<br />
Teenagers across Canada are buying an herb that packs a powerful psychedelic punch. Health Canada and the RCMP say they're keeping a close eye on the legal sales. <br />
<br />
Salvia divinorum, a sage-like plant, can produce intense hallucinations when smoked or chewed. <br />
<br />
"When I first did it, within 30 seconds it was already doing its thing," said Blair Anderson, who co-owns a drug paraphernalia shop a few blocks from a high school in Edmonton. "I was thinking 'Man, this is just like LSD but it's happening really fast.'"<br />
<br />
The store's co-owner, Colin Rogucki, said they decided not to sell the cheap drug to anyone under 18 because he thinks the drug's intensity makes it potentially dangerous to young teens. <br />
<br />
The pair said they turn down many young people trying to get salvia to smoke. <br />
<br />
"The drug is very common, easy to get and it's not illegal," said Constable Jason Lefebvre, a high school resource officer with Edmonton police. "So it seems natural that a lot of younger people are interested and curious about it and want to try it."<br />
<br />
Students have reported the drug was disorienting, Lefebvre said. "They didn't say it was very much fun."<br />
<br />
Edmonton police plan to provide more information about salvia to students and parents in September.<br />

I got a couple of # firsts# for ya <br />
<br />
First, is this your question?<br />
<br />
First, why would you assume knowledge of this particular psychoactive herb is unknown to teens?<br />
<br />
First, what if any researches have you done into Salvia Divinorum? <br />
<br />
Salvia divinorum is an extraordinary herb used in shamanism, divination, healing, meditation, and the exploration of consciousness.<br />
It should always be used in a thoughtful, intelligent manner, and only by responsible adults that are of sound mind and clear intent.<br />
<br />
"The purpose of these sacraments is to purify, and to open the road. When it opens,<br />
it's as clear as the blue sky, and the stars at night are as bright as suns."<br />

Freedom of Thought at the Crossroads <br />
HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF...<br />
• You were compelled to take a medicine that policed your bloodstream for illegal drug molecules? <br />
• You were accused of a crime, but forced to take psychoactive drugs while on trial? <br />
• You were arrested and brain-fingerprinted? <br />
• Medicines that improve your memory, or which help you achieve productive insights were available, but responsible adults who used them were made criminals? <br />
Freedom of thought is at a critical crossroads. <br />
Today, drugs and other advanced technologies are making it possible to change your thought processes. On the one hand, they hold tremendous opportunities for enabling enhanced human functioning. On the other hand, they raise deeply troubling prospects for an entirely new form of coercion. One thing is clear: the parameters of freedom of thought are changing as much as the printing press and the Internet changed the parameters of freedom of speech. <br />
Lawmakers and judges are making important decisions now that set alarming precedent for the future of freedom of thought. Without freedom of thought there can be no free society. <br />
The ACLU protects your civil liberties, but who is working to protect your cognitive liberty? <br />
THE CCLE: KEEPING FREEDOM IN MIND<br />
The Center for Cognitive Liberty & Ethics is a rights-based public policy organization dedicated to promoting freedom of thought. Our mission is to develop, and implement public polices that preserve and enhance freedom of thought into the 21st Century.<br />
WHY FOCUS ON FREEDOM OF THOUGHT?<br />
The right to freedom of thought is situated at the core of what it means to be a free person. It is essential to the most elementary concepts of human freedom, dignity, and self-expression. It’s what gives us collective confidence that the future will improve upon the past.<br />
In the past, civil rights battles were centered on freeing the body from oppression.<br />
The civil rights battles of today and tomorrow must now focus on protecting the fundamental right to brain privacy, autonomy, and choice (i.e., "cognitive liberty"). At stake is the unlimited potential of the human mind.<br />
WHY IS COGNITIVE LIBERTY A PRESSING ISSUE?<br />
We’ve seen how inadequately the courts and lawmakers have handled rapid advances in digital communication, and the Patriot Act shows how rabidly some politicians are willing to sacrifice well-established freedoms in the name of "increased security." Let’s be sure that those charged with administering for the public good don't run roughshod over freedom of thought. <br />
WHAT CAN I DO?<br />
Every person can make a difference.<br />
1. Get Informed: Find good sources of information, and educate yourself on current and emerging freedom of thought issues. <br />
2. Take a Stand: If you believe in freedom of thought, let others know, especially your elected leaders. Make your stand part of who you are and the way you live your life.<br />
3. Get Involved: Write letters national and local media, call or visit your elected representatives, and volunteer.<br />
4. Support the Center for Cognitive Liberty & Ethics.<br />
Most nonprofit organizations rely primarily on the generosity of individual donors in order to be effective. The CCLE is no exception; indeed 90 percent of our support comes from individuals like you. <br />
If you are learning about the CCLE for the first time, we invite you to join the community that supports our work. And if you are a current or past supporter, we invite you to reaffirm the stand you have taken, and consider increasing your support this year.<br />
Please support our work by by making a donation. Supporters receive regular updates on important cognitive liberty news, and join others around the world who recognize the necessity of protecting freedom of thought today, before it's too late.<br />
Your support has never been more crucial. Please give what you can.<br />

Canada's main stream media, although perhaps more 'liberal' than other countries, still plays the game of 'omission'. Nothing important, given reasonable airtime (or at all). i.e. Global warming, this issue, decay of privacy, etc....Did you know almost all Canadian flights now report their passenger information to the US? Thats rights, the US basically 'watches and records' almost all air traffic within Canada (domestic and international). That didn't make the news.
The problem in Canada is we "beleive" our media is "better" than the rest of the world. Shame shame shame on Canadian for being so nieve. Our media is WORSE than the rest of the world since we "believe" it is responsible.
NAFTA, WHO, (all the letter organization) are all about the promotion of Corporate interests. (i.e. NAFTA gives corporations the ability to set goverment policies. ) Most of these organizations were started by the USA to promote their own Corporate interests. Do some reading about the IMF. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see this. Heck, even the new US, Canada, Mexico agreement is all about corporate interest (i.e. only have to prove a drug is safe in one of the three countries).
Hell, go one step further and you'll see that Canada has now aligned a majority of its policies with the US (i.e. in the "fight against terrorism"). We are officially the 54th state (after Puerto Rico).
Anyhow, I'm always a little suprised when people don't realize any of this and still think the goverment organizations are actually 'for the people'. That battle was lost on 9/11 when the world's goverments found a way to stop the anti-globalization fight, using 9/11 as an excuse to demolish freedom and privacy.
