Canadians Prefer Independent Polices From The U.S.

The Prime Minister’s support for missile defence could be a liability for the government as it struggles to increase its popular support, according to Polaris Institute project director Steven Staples. "It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that Paul Martin should probably withdraw from missile defence negotiations with the U.S. before he calls the election," said Staples.

Council of Canadians Campaigner Guy Caron noted, “Time and time again, Canadians have repeated that they want foreign trade, energy and social policies that strengthen Canada, not weaken its ability to chart its future.”

The Ipsos-Reid poll was conducted with 1056 Canadian adults between March 23 and March 25 2004 and was commissioned by the Council of Canadians and the Polaris Institute. The results are considered accurate to within ± 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, and are available from http://www.ipsos-reid.com.

Some of those numbers are ridiculous! 90-91% think we should have our own policies. Why is that even a question though?

Dumb premise for this poll and article. Of course Canadian policy should be independent of U.S. when it is in our interest but it's stupid to undermine our own interests just to spite the U.S. and 'prove' to ourselves we're a different country, which is what the tone of this article would suggest Canadians want to do.

but it's stupid to undermine our own interests just to spite the U.S. and 'prove' to ourselves we're a different country, which is what the tone of this article would suggest Canadians want to do.

Your perception of the tone of the article is your perception, it doesn't represent the real tone of the article. You may like to think so, but I don't agree.
Not getting involved in the missle defense is a world wide protest. Most countries are in disagreement with this plan. Its in Canada's best interest to stand behind the majority of Countries, rather then going along with the U.S.
Look back in history, Canada has always taken a independent stand on issues. Why should this be any different?
The missle defense plan will encourage other countries to also make up a star wars plan. Some countries who are in disagreement with this plan, have basically said "if you do it, so will we" (in my own words). It makes sense that this would create a race amongst countries. It will be something like "who has the biggest military defense". That isn't exactly the best way to promote peace. Canada was and should be about peace keeping, not doing things that will lead to more war.
Kevin
