Nobody knows for sure when the absolute peak year of global oil production will occur. You can only tell for sure in the "rear-view mirror," seeing the data after the fact. The US oil production peak in 1970 was not really recognized until the numbers came in over the next couple of years. By 1973 it was pretty clear that US oil production was in decline - the numbers were there for anyone to see, because the US oil industry was fairly transparent. They had to report their production to regulatory agencies. And low and behold American production was going down - despite the fact that we were selling more cars and more suburban houses. Of course we had been making up for falling production by increasing our oil imports. http://www.kunstler.com/spch_hudson.htm

Right, long but very good article. Makes you think and I expect there is truth in what he says. Our oil dependancy is what is driving us, and once we recognize it won't sustain the level of demands, we will be forced to change, and as it says in the article maybe for the better.

Honestly, I like the idea of being thrown back into the 1920's - ha ha. I agree with him when he talks about large retail chains like Walmart depend on cheap oil -- and the thought of a company like Walmart going down in the process makes me smile.

I also believe that it'll be a big test on our society - I guess it'll be sink or swim for some of us!

It's funny because I am 27 years old, and I just started driving - and my husband (the driver in our family) was laughing because he says "You just start driving and in 10 years you'll be back to walking!"
