Lockheed Martin and the Canadian Census
Friday May 7, 2004
Hon. Bill Blaikie (Winnipeg?Transcona, NDP): Mr. Speaker, for months the NDP has been objecting to the fact that Statistics Canada contracted out the next census to Lockheed Martin. Questions in the House resulted in the usual non-answers, but I am pleased to say that as a result of our pursuing this issue and the pressure exerted by all those Canadians who contacted Statistics Canada, we learned earlier this week that Lockheed Martin will no longer be doing the next census. As a result of further pressure later in the week, the remaining role of Lockheed Martin in the mini census was also identified and then dealt with, which is to say eliminated.

Hats off to the Vive le Canada website and to all those who persuaded Statistics Canada that the integrity of the census was at stake. It is one thing to buy software from a company. It is another thing to have it do what Canadians want done in-house by their own Statistics Canada.

The NDP is pleased to have played a role in changing this policy by working with its extra-parliamentary friends on this issue. Unfortunately, as usual, the Liberals never got it and did nothing to help.

Note: in other cases in the U.S.

This confirms my worst fears, until we have something 100% truth, we aren't going to believe the b.s.; this should be monumental if it worked, so why is main stream media not reporting? Could it be that we have been given a curve ball instead of the truth, after all shouldn't Lockheed Martin be outraged at the lose of this contract? Reactions are not what they should be if this is the truth, don't you think?

Well someone over at StatsCan is very interested in what Vive and CDM are doing. One of our webteam brought this to my attention:

    stcweb2.statcan.ca - - [07/May/2004:15:35:29 -0500]

Its a ref log entry - one of dozens over the past week. Every article we have posted on the issue has been read - sometimes more than once - maybe to check any comments. Vive we are sure will be seeing the same thing in their own logs as well.

At least we know they are paying attention, but as Susan stated - until we get 100% confirmation - stay at attention.

    Take care,

    Roy

I suppose that makes it an issue to discuss strategy openly on the
website, with statscan listening in - one of the risks in decentralized /
distributed organizing. We knew that all along, but this just hits it
    home.

AS one of my friends once said to me, though, if they listen in long
enough, they will eventually be convinced and join our side!

Sort of a complement of the Stockholm Syndrome. Call it Surveillance
    Blues.
