Alberta Moves Ahead On Private Health Care Bill

Posted on Friday, January 27 at 10:48 by whelan costen
The province's decision to finally adopt the controversial proposals comes just as a Conservative prime minister from Alberta, Stephen Harper, is about to take power, albeit with a minority government after Monday's federal election. Klein said it's good to have a government from the West at such a time, but he stressed the timing of Alberta moving on the issue is coincidental. The health reforms have been in the works for a long time and Alberta would be proceeding regardless of who came into power in Ottawa, he said. The premier said he spoke to Harper about the province's decision, and would only say the two leaders agreed to "keep the lines of communication open." http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20060126/alberta_private_healthcare_060126/20060127?hub=Canada [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on January 27, 2006]

Now that`s the true colours of a conservative! Dog eat dog- pay for yourself- profit over people`s health medicine. Just ignore the fact that the majority of Canadians supported the Romanow Report.

Here is my take on this, they play the media and the people, tell someone they can't have something, anything, and that is what they want, even if it will impoverish them! So what, as long as we win against Ottawa, somehow that means we win...I find it strange but it seems many Albertans believe this crap, and it is crap! We can afford healthcare, publicly funded, accessible healthcare for all, and in Alberta the richest province there is only one reason to privatize and that is the for profit guys want it and Klein wants to please them, not the average Albertan....once again we are being played...too bad we don't have any alternative media in Alberta!

I imagine this will come in to play with the $400.00 cheque in the mail, and people will be oh isn't that great, too bad your next healthcare emergency won't be $400.00,nor your utility bills. Living in the richest province gives us the right to talk big, and sacrifice the poor all to prove a point, that we don't take orders from Ottawa! It is so crazy, that kind of psychology works on a two year old, and yet it also seems to work on alot of adults, in Alberta at least...

If Alberta goes ahead with this would they still receive federal funding for any portion of it? I think they should be cut off if that is the case. They are jeopardizing all Canadians health care by doing what they are proposing.

And that $400.00 cheque will sure as hell not be covering private health care anytime soon.

Now we see what kept Ralph's mouth shut during the election. Coincidental timing; total bullshit!!! I have yet to talk to one person in Alberta who think private health insurance is a good idea. What is happening is that Albertans are reluctantly relinquishing the idea of publically delivered healthcare after the Government of Alberta has sold off hospitals to create the crisis they claim only the private sector can solve. Albertans' support for this is not genuine but more a matter of resignation.

Stephen Harper has promised in the past that he will not penalize the provinces for decisions on the delivery of health care. At the same time, the party has promised to support the Canada Health Act. There appears to be an inconsistency here in their official policy. We will have to wait to see what "hidden" agenda the Klein government has in mind to see what happens.

The Alberta government has taken quite a bit of flack for raiding health care workers from other provinces. If they privatize delivery they can blame such raids on the private sector.

I still say we need a general strike across the country! Here in Port Colborne, we`re trying to save our hospital. Our hospital was built by the PEOPLE back in the 50`s, but the various levels of government seem hell bent on slowly dismantling, such as not recruiting doctors, cutting nursing staff, then 'temporarily' shutting down the ICU, until eventually, there`s no hospital. That goes without saying that hospital administration is somehow top heavy! Then these vampires will sell the hospital and pocket the gold! Nearby hospitals, such as Welland, already cannot handle the capacity they receive! So far, we`ve got over 4,000 signatures on a petition to re-open the ICU. Now, meetings by politicians are behind 'closed doors.' I`m telling you folks, we CANNOT let these losers privatize our health care system! The Canada Health Act means nothing if privatization occurs. Even in 'rich' Alberta, the people don`t really want privatization.

The timing of Klein's call to Harper is hardly coincidental. Klein's move in this direction is as others have noted nothing new. This is a matter of ideology on the part of Ralph. Beyond violating the Canada Health Act what are the implications for Ralph's move with respect to NAFTA and the opening of Canadian Public Health to health care corporations based in the US? If Ralph goes ahead is the ground being plowed for law suits against the Canadian government under NAFTA? Liberals, the NDP and the BLOC are going to have their asses to the glass on this and multiple other issues that fit with the ideological bent of this brand of conservatism. Public Health care is the thing that the majority of Canadians value most...the Liberals need to fill the leadership hole quickly..Ralph is pressing this in the belief no party will take us to the polls quickly. Let's hope he has miscalculated and the other parties will not adopt a spineless approach to this incursion despite what may be offered as a quid pro quo.
What we have observed is Leo Strauss' approach applied to Canada....more to come!

Under NAFTA it could possibly open Canada up for lawsuits by Americans who want to get their fat greedy fingers into our health care funds.

However, who said that we HAD to stay in NAFTA?

They don't pay their bills for power.

They don't let us run our own industries our way.

They consume resources like a hog being fattened for slaughter.

They can't even be bothered to follow the terms of their own treaties.

And this benefits Canada how exactly..?

I say we should opt out of NAFTA and ship that boozing bag of pig vomit named Ralph to the US.
