Prime Minister Harper And Premier Charest Sign Historic Agreement

Posted on Saturday, May 06 at 08:54 by jensonj
Premier Charest stressed that the agreement, which recognizes Quebec’s unique and distinct personality, confirms Quebec’s special role on the world scene. “The signing of this Agreement, based on asymmetrical federalism, ushers in a new era of partnership between our two governments. Our presence in UNESCO will give us a say in sectors that are important for Quebec’s identity, such as culture, science and education. The federal government is formally recognizing Quebec’s capacity to act on the international front.” http://www.pm.gc.ca/eng/media.asp?id=1151

    Historic? Harper is building a base for a majority government. Noting more and nothing less. As such he has gone after everyone who traditionally votes liberal, such as first Nations (recognizing aboriginal veterans), the East Indian community (Air India), Quebec (this article), and there will be more, much more.....
    The interesting part of of this though is that the "oppostion" cannot naysay, without appearing to alienate these same groups......

    But if he attains his majority next time around, these gestures won't mean squat............

    Don't forget the Chinese he apologized to as well....oh he also cut the landing fee in half for newcomers.

    Multiculturalism is neither left nor right, but rather a sickening indication of what happens when 'representative government' fails the majority.

    He is in fact reaching out to everyone (liberal). But he won't actually go so far as to hug them (perhaps shake hands). But these people will find, if they vote for Harper to the point where he heads a majority government, that they will have shaken hands with the devil (with apologies to Roméo Dallaire).

    All we now need is:

    a Hispanic seat at UNESCO for the US;
    a Kurd seat at UNESCO for Turkey;
    a Basque seat at UNESCO for Spain;
    a Frisian seat at UNESCO for the Netherlands;
    two extra seats for Belgium at UNESCO, because they have three language groups (Dutch and German) besides French;
    an Aboriginal seat at UNESCO for Australia;
    a Maori seat at UNESCO for New Zealand;
    and hey, Northern Ireland also needs a seat at UNESCO;

    (and now I suddenly understand why Switserland is not part of UNESCO, because they would need four seats for their four language groups)

    Stack the house and let the costs go up, so that nothing will be accomplished. This is just like the phony Franco - phony.
