Alta Premier Ralph Klein In TV Debate Denies Secret Health Privatization Plan

Posted on Wednesday, November 10 at 10:02 by N Say
"I've heard this accusation so many times. I can tell you we do not - do not - have a secret privatization plan," said Klein, responding to accusations from his Liberal and NDP opponents in the lone televised leaders' debate of the Alberta election campaign.

Voters go to the polls Nov. 22.

Klein said his vision is to have the "best health-care system in Canada" and said it's up to Albertans to tell him how they want it done.

NDP Leader Brian Mason accused Klein of experimenting with health privatization and private clinics even though statistics show publicly delivered health would be more cost effective.

Liberal Leader Kevin Taft said the Tories have squandered time and money for years and have not come up with a coherent vision.

"The problem is the credibility of your government on this issue is shot," said Taft.

Klein's reluctance to discuss health reforms has been a key issue in the two-week-old campaign.

He has talked about introducing radical reforms to the health system, including delisting some services, charging extra fees and moving further into the private delivery of health care.

Klein has said he will talk to Albertans about the changes after the election but doesn't want to hijack the debate by talking about them now.

The private health accusations are deja vu for Klein.

In the spring, he pulled back on a plan to roll out some of the proposals after they became a divisive issue in the federal election campaign.

I don't know why people can't take politicians at their word. Oh, wait, yes I do.

From watching the debate, I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a plan. In fact, I don't think King Ralph has a plan, of any sort. But at least the Liberals have written things down.

None of them have any sort of fresh ideas. Ralph has always taken a lead from the Federal Liberals and his guiding force seems to be public opinion.

Sorry Ralph, most people aren't going to vote for you based on what may be behind door number 3. Put your cards on the table, I call. The election is his to lose, and I'm not going to be voting based on things I don't know. Whoever has a solid clear vision, and perhaps even one single original thought, will be my choice.

Even if it's the Alberta Communist party.

Having written to him about my disdain for P3's of any sort I can tell you that the conservatives do plan to carry on with P3's because they think P3's make sense. He wrote to me (or one of his ministers did) and told me this. When I asked him to show me the cost benefit analysis studies which they used to draw their conclusions I received a reply back saying the same thing that the first reply said. I have yet to receive any accounting data and I therefore must assume that the government of Alberta has hired accountants who used to work for Nortel.

I have been watching the local candidates here in Alberta gear up for the comming elections.... It's easy to see that they are 'cockey' about winning again, thing is, the local redneck community has had it... the province will speak LOUD and CLEAR at the polls, and ole Ralphie will have to dust off his CV and apply for a job down east, cause no one want's him or his crew of lackeys here anymore....

The thing that really upset a lot of local's here in Edmonton isn't the 'hidden health agenda' that's a crock...

...It's that stupid background issue of Gary Mar handing out money for nothing... like did the guy go to college with Mark Knopler or what....

...It's Ralphies total disregard for the desires of the populace and his total focus on what's good for him and his yahoo's...

...Change is comming Ralph, the writting is on the craphouse walls here and the PC's are heading down, headfirst.

This election is clearly going to be the urban vote against the rural one. This is mostly because the people on the farms and ranches here don't have access to any real information (just what the cows tell 'em). How do I know, I live in a small commuter town (Airdrie) just outside of Calgary with two small community papers that function as rah-rah rags for the Tories and would never print a story critical of Ralph Klein. At least people here have access to daily delivery of the Calgary Herald (limited as it is for actual news and analysis); people in small town Alberta have only the above-mentioned advert flyers.

The Tories will most likely win but I hope with a credible number of opposition seats to actually constitute a democracy. I also hope there is a push for some kind of proportional representation in this province after this election. The Tories got about 90% of the seats the last time but got far less as a percentage of the popular vote.

Makes sense, knowing as though Everyone south of Edmonton loves Ralph and his semi-Alberta nationalism, and "stick up Ottawa's A$$ mentality". Whether you like it or not, right wing politics are as old as this province, and they've been very successful. They will continue to be.
