Take Action Now To Protect Health Information Privacy In Alberta!

Posted on Friday, September 17 at 10:59 by sthompson
Now New Democrat M.L.A. Raj Pannu, a member of the Select Special Health Information Act Review Committee, has suggested that the committee request the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta to undertake a similar investigation in Alberta. This is wholly within the powers and jurisdiction of the committee.

You can support Pannu's proposal by sending an email to the privacy commissioner and committee members. It's easy--just click here to send our form letter.

And be sure to use the tell a friend button to the right of this page to let other Albertans know about the action!

Thanks for your help,

Sincerely,
Susan Thompson,

and the Vive board of directors

Living as I do in BC, I can tell you that, as serious as the subject matter is about privacy, people hardly give it a "boo". It is a classic erosion of democracy, and we <u>hoi polloi</u> won't even realise it until it's gone (and perhaps not even then, as we have been convinced that we live in a dangerous world, and we DEMAND that government DO SOMETHING - ANYTHING about it). <p>But, and as another indicator of this erosion, our various governments are increasingly becoming more blatant about their self-interests, and the personal agendas of their members, which seldom have the interests of the voters at their centres.</p> We are going to have to take matters into our own hands, if we are truly concerned. There quite simply is no one "out there" to intercede for us.......<p>---<br>RickW

I think this letter is a good start, the more copies Raj Pannu receives the more weight it will hold, we also need to somehow get the press on this!

I wonder if there is a way to print out the entire letter for people who are not computer users, so they can mail it in? I'd like to print a few and get people informed and to sign a letter, if possible?

Rick, you are aware of the way the electoral system is set up. A "common" person such as myself cannot get elected to the government since I don't have the funding, the group of enthusiastic volunteers, and I have little visibility in my own community.

What we need are regular people that can do these things, get the group, the funding, and get elected to the HoC, then we could see a difference.

The "honest" politicians, and there are many that go in with their eyes in the stars, are soon intimidated to the point they seem to lose their focus, and they eventually become corrupted, or simply left on the back benches to keep a seat warm.

Cretin said it best: "who are dos guys back der ?? We don't need dem, do we ?"

The ordeal in BC was covered by most of the media for a few days then it did indeed just disappeared. Some people came to me asking if it could be true, and what to expect, but even most of them just let it go.

Question is: How to keep it in the public realm, and to make the politicians stand up and listen?

Perhaps there is a legal way of forcing them to listen to the people.

A class action suit would surely get their attention, but I don't know if we have the right to do that.

If not, perhaps we should focus on ways we can force them to do things in a more democratic way. Waiting for the next election is not going to change the way they do things.

We need a plan that would strike at the heart of the system, swiftly.

Any law students out there that want to make a name for yourselves ?? This could keep you busy for years.
