189M To Send Tanks To Afghanistan: O'Connor

Posted on Wednesday, November 08 at 11:09 by 4Canada
Five of the 42-tonne monsters are already in operation with another 12 to be deployed in the next month. Some military experts and others have expressed concern the Leopards could further alienate Afghans already suspicious of foreign troops. During Tuesday’s questioning, Opposition Leader Bill Graham questioned O’Connor on whether recent air strikes and the use of tanks against insurgents hiding in villages is interfering with the delivery of aid to the Afghan people. http://tinyurl.com/y7e29f

$189 million to send tanks to kill Afghans with no guarantee they will help protect our troops. Yet going through town today I see homeless, drug addicts, broken infrastructure and a haze around the local mountains from pollution. That money could rectify this problem for all of Greater Vancouver yet...

Not to mention how many schools could be built in Afghanistan for that, plus the costs of maintaining a Timmies there...

Your not going to win hearts and minds by driving main battle tanks through the streets. You just scare people half to death and risk getting a molotov down the hatch from a second story window.

They should have continued with the LAV gun carrier project. Just as effective, but far less intimidating.

The Leopards DO look sexy, though, in their brand-new reactive armour add-ons and fresh paint! The troops will LUV em. PLEASE, Taliban, leave us ONE or TWO to withdraw with!

No kidding. I heard that in Iraq the Abrams are rarely used because among problems with mobility in an urban setting, they draw fire because it's a big deal for the Iraqi's to take them out - it's like a rite of passage for the kids. The Iraqi's have apparently uncovered every imaginable weakness in the tank and have become skilled at taking them out. That's what I heard anyway.

The Israelis just found that out in Lebanon with the Merkavas. Killing one was probably worth at least a promotion and a ride around the bunker on the shoulders of your buddies in the ranks of the Hizbollah. It looks like some entire defense projects were built just to trap and kill Merkavas.

They had fought stone throwing kids in Gaza with them for so long, they were completely taken by shock when trained guerrillas started firing effective anti-tank missiles at them.

I think the day of the MBT invulnerability in the counter-insurgency battlefield is drawing to a close.
