Speak Now For Canada Before It's Too Late

Posted on Sunday, March 13 at 11:03 by whelan costen
Why is our and the rest of the world’s food supply allowed to be jeopardized by a corporations’ insatiable greed? Quote from the News: ‘NDP Agriculture Critic Angus has steadfastly rallied against the Liberal agenda to end the international moratorium on so-called terminator seeds. The federal government recently attempted to undermine consensus on the international ban on terminator seed technology at a UN conference on bio-diversity in Bangkok. These terminator seeds are genetically modified to produce plants with infertile seeds, thereby “terminating” the opportunity to harvest seeds for the next crop.’ Why are business groups dictating our position on BMD? Canadians have said no, we do not wish to participate in a war agenda, we did not want to assist in the destruction of the people of Iraq, nor do we wish to create jobs on the backs of death machines or allow one country to control and use space for their own agenda. Quote from the news: WASHINGTON (CP) - Canadian businesses losing contracts, jobs, research opportunities and investments because of Ottawa's decision not to join the U.S. missile defence plan say they'll press the federal government to reverse course. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce plans a big push with all political parties because of the economic fallout, president Nancy Hughes Anthony said Friday. "Some of our members equated it to the Avro Arrow decision, where they could see a brain drain that went south of the border with respect to engineers and people in the aerospace industry," she said. It is ludicrous, to compare the actions of the Deifenbaker government, to appease the U.S. administration, by destroying the Avro Arrow and thereby crushing a great Canadian pride with it, to this issue. The comparison ends with the pressure being inflicted by another country on our policy. I would like to know why the Chamber of Commerce has the right to attempt to usurp the will of Canadian people in this regard? Is the right to a career more important than the right to life? I would ask you if the financial rewards for a few are valued more than the safety and security of this planet and every human being on it? Were those who created the bombs used at Hiroshima and Nakisaki, entitled to their careers more than the people entitled to their lives? Is the economic gain valued more than the safety and security of the planet? Why is Mr. Manley and Mr. D’Aquino allowed to promote the corporate agenda around the world, and suggest the further integration of North America? Why is Canadian Sovereignty not a protected right? Why have you allowed Paul Cellucci, to grandstand all over this country promoting his country’s agenda and insulting Canadians? Why has it become an accepted practice to allow people to bully Canada into performing in a manner, which we have an abhorrent dislike, such as waging war or becoming a colony of the U.S.A.? News Quote: SEAN GORDON OTTAWA BUREAU OTTAWA—An influential tri-national panel has considered a raft of bold proposals for an integrated North America, including a continental customs union, single passport and contiguous security perimeter. This past week I watched as you and many other dignitaries spoke in high regard for Canadians, for our traditions, our national unity, and our national pride, as we collectively mourned the loss of four dedicated young men who swore to serve and protect the people of this great nation. We were traumatized by the actions of one man, who threatened the safety and security of our peaceful nation. You do not see that kind of outpouring of sympathy for any other nation’s police force, but you do see it in Canada, because we seek peace. We uphold the values of concern and care for our fellow citizen, we do not wish to see anyone living with sorrow and grief caused by another, be that one man or many men, or one company or many companies! We do not wish to live in constant turmoil, where the survival of the fittest is the law of the land. That is why we support social policy to aid our less fortunate, that is why we support the land mines treaty, and why we were against the brutal illegal war in Iraq and the horrors of Sudan, Rwanda and the starvation and war in all parts of the world. We see what happens when governments lose their focus, when the greed of a few is translated into the impoverishment of thousands. We see that the cost of war is great and that it serves no purpose other than to enlarge the bank accounts of corporations and their shareholders. We the people of this great nation you spoke of in Edmonton this week, deserve to be respected through our government policy and the values which we hold dear enshrined within our public policy. I realize you hold a very delicate position with a minority government, and in attempting to appease the perceived slights from our neighbor to the south; however with all due respect, you must serve the ‘best interests of Canada and its people first and foremost’. I believe that you must stand strong and send a clear message to those dissenters that attack through the back door to serve themselves and not this nation, and those who have an agenda which threatens to destroy this country. They ought to be warned that their actions are not going to be fruitful. What message is your government sending to the world and to the citizens of Canada? Are we or are we not a sovereign nation, capable of making our own decisions, capable of leading the world in peaceful initiatives, which aid in ending poverty, ending the proliferation of wmd, promoting the end of pollution through our example, protecting our public lands, ceasing further integration with the U.S.A., ceasing the sell off of public lands, protecting our water, air and soil and food supply from corporate greed; stopping foreign ownership of this country, which further threatens our ability to stand against those things we disagree with, such as BMD; standing against unfair trade deals such as NAFTA, which has simply handcuffed governments in this country and given free reign to corporate interests? Canadians know what we are, we have elected people to follow through on our requests. Does the government of Canada, through you our Prime Minister support the people of Canada or the will of corporations and the agenda of a foreign power? I know what the answer should be, but I wouldn’t be asking if your position was clear? Besides answering my letter, I would encourage you to make your position completely clear to the media and the world before it’s too late! I look forward to your response. Yours truly Catherine Whelan Costen Cc:www.vivelecanada.ca Jack Layton, Leader NDP Ted Menzies, MP Charlie Angus, MP Institute for Cooperation in Space

Wht only send this to the NDP? They have no power....all we need to know is why they don't speak up.

    Great letter! I've sent mine.

If the reply is like the email I sent to the PMO, she will get a form letter back thanking her for sending it with no regard to the actual content of what was said (my sister also sent one sometime before me and it was the same form letter). He obviously doesn't reply personally but I would just as soon get an email back simply acknowledging mine was received without any pretense that it was actually read.

Hopefully Vive has developed enough of a name that they will take note of Catherine's letter, with which I entirely agree and appreciate her writing.

To address the comment below as to why send a CC to Jack Layton of the NDP, while the NDP may not actually hold power officially they hold almost the balance of power (minus one seat that is not hard to make up for in the bloc, or former PC Party MPs turned alliance against their will) and so therefore do have power and are capable of much influence. As such, if the Prime Minister chooses to ignore this letter the NDP may well bring it up in the house.

To answer the why to the others? If you only send a letter to the PM he can disregard or say it wasn't received. As mentioned the NDP can bring it up to support my view, as Charlie Angus is fighting the seed issue, it is important for him to know Canadians support his initiative. Menzies is my elected representative,(C) and they need to know what Canadians want from gov. Also the ICIS, as they are taking a strong position on BMD also mentioned in the letter, and of course vive so that others can be inspired, hopefully to also write. I think we have to remove the fear factor by writing and letting people know it is our country and our right and responsibility to let the government know where we stand. You don't have to agree with me, just let your views be known. That is democracy in my opinion.

With all the cc's nobody can say that the subject hasn't been mentioned, or that Canadians aren't speaking up. I am not going to let the business elite drive my government without an argument.

Corporations are starting to fear citizen power, so they will do end runs around democracy by doing what we are seeing. THey have been neutered by election campaign financing reform so they will now spend that money on 'roundtables' and 'thinktank orgies' and 'cross-border studies'.

They are itching for a fight and all they have is money - they actually in reality have little power if citizens face them down. And if we want our nation to remain Canadian - face them down we must.

" You do things again and again, and nothing happens. You have to do things, do things, do things,. You have to light that match, light that match, light that match, not knowing how often it's going to sputter and go out and at what point it's going to take hold. Things take a long time. It requires patience, but not a passive patience -- the patience of activism." (Howard Zinn, historian & activist)

The corp.s won't stop, unless they are forced to. We have to fight them with every resource we have at our disposal.

Our Prime Minister will never see this letter--some idiot within his office will read it and chuck it into the garbage. What we probably need most right now is some direct threat of action against those who have no qualms about their betrayal of their country. Quisling comes to mind.

Another great letter, Catherine. Let`s keep hammering them! We must flood cabinet ministers and MP`s with similar letters! Pressure, pressure, pressure! Then let`s take it a step further!

It is extremely difficult to counter the insidious ways these corporate interests are manipulating the political agenda.

We know that these corporate interests target the two larger parties but what has surprised me is how fast they are to target the smaller parties as well.

They hire people to cover all the bases. They are at war with pro-Canadians, so we must act accordingly. We don't have the deep pockets, so then we must consume them with our money - the voices of the people.

If enough speak up we will win. Like the excellent zinn quote above - we must keep it up. They will always be back for round two, three, four and so on. We are fighting a beast that has grown for 70 years. It is big, it is bad and it is powerful, but, like all beasts it can and will be slain.

We are the king makers - us the people - not some nameless, faceless corporate machine.

**sniff**sniff** What is that I smell? Do I smell revolution in the air?

    To quote RAGE -
    "It has to start somewhere
    It has to start sometime
    What better place than here
    What better time than now
All hell cant stop us now!"
