New Moderation And Comment Hiding

Posted on Thursday, April 28 at 11:11 by Jesse
If you go into the comments on the main articles (none of this applies to the forums), you will notice that some comments are initially not shown. The hidden comments have been voted on by our admins and found to have far too much suck and not enough good. You will also notice some new links on each comment, namely "show comment" or "hide comment". These let you view hidden comments, in case someone's reply makes no sense, or you are a masochist or something. Currently, voting on comments is restricted to a small set of users, since it's very much a work in progress. As time goes on, we'll be expanding this moderation, eventually letting all users participate in the voting, and providing more related features. Let us know what you think, and if you can think of any problems with this system. Vive le Canada, vive les discussions civils! ---------- A few clarifications based on the comments: Currently, only the moderators are able to vote on comments. hiding/showing is so you can make your own decisions on the quality of the comments instead of relying on the votes of others Voting is done based on the content of each individual comment, so the easiest way to not be hidden is to post high quality comments. You will not get to vote on every comment. The right to vote must be earned by posting good comments of your own, and is a temporary privilege. Similar systems have been successfully deployed on other sites, so it *is* possible for it to work This is really just distributing power from a few 'elite' moderators (who are mostly pro-canada anti-NAFTA) to all registered users of the site. This comment 'hiding' will replace most comment deletion, meaning there should be *less* potential for censorship (and, if there is, it is 'soft' censorship) We have safeguards in place to avoid most of the potential for abuse, and will add more as needed. Even though anonymous users will not be able to vote, they will still be able to post. Yes, this will be a bit subject to the whim of the majority. Suggestions on how to maintain dissenting voices are welcome (other than not having voting).

<p>My preference would be to initially show everything — presume “innocence” until evidence reveals “guilt”. (Being on dialup, I’d rather ignore the less relevant replies on a single page than execute extra downloads to find out what’s been pre-hidden.)</p>

clearing up a couple of misconceptions:

    - all comments are downloaded at first and present on the first page load. Hiding is done using javascript, which means there's no extra reloading to see what was hidden. (we like dialup users too)

    - the only way to keep yourself from being hidden is to post things that are relevant. All you need is a 50% + 1 vote, which should make the separatists happy ;)

    - there will be extra rules enforced by the code to keep people from abusing the system; being a jerk when voting is punished as much as being a jerk when posting

    - the plans include an option to show all comments; I just haven't gotten to that point yet.

It will be interesting to see how this works out. Thanks Jesse.

The awkward format for comments has seemed more of a problem
    than rude comments.

It's almost as if the replies are half-hidden in the shrubbery at the
    best of times ... sometimes I can't tell if it's a title, a wise saying, or a
    reply, at first.

I'd vote for free speech with improved spaces for comments.

    Best wishes.

I think I know what you are trying to get at here, but I have no idea of how it is being accomplished. I don't get the explanation. Am I the only one? Do I suck at comprehension?

Maybe I'm missing something here but how are you keeping track of which comments are being made by each individual anonymous contributor? If the user receives negative reaction in the vote, do you simply delete that one comment and if so how does that keep that particular person from coming back on the site and doing the same thing again and again?

Quite frankly, the problem I'm having on your site is that I don't have time to sift through useless comments, which are almost always contributed by anonymous users who seem to only be commenting to make trouble and not for valid discussion. I might also note that the diversion of threads to petty bickering and name calling seems to be instigated mostly by anonymous users. Personally, i think those of us who are responsible enough to own our comments by getting a username should boycott comments by anon users by not replying to their comments or commenting on their submitted articles.

Oh great system, now all of my comments will be 'hidden'.

Should have just banned me and showed a little courage. And ban everybody who doesn't share the "America is the great satan" world view. I thought dissenting opinions were what sparked political debate, and maybe that's what was wanted here. But now I see the truth, its supposed to be a sounding board for useless idiots who espouse the evils of the USA, and other viewpoints are not welcome. What a joke.

Even if I disagree most of the time with Darvin, I think he has a valid point in regards to the tyranny of the majority. We somehow need to "trust" that the majority will not simply shut off its minorities. Have been there, done that... Not sure if there are any safeguard on this.

I believe you can choose to view the 'hidden' comment if you wish.

The functionality should be useful for posts that are submitted purely to disrupt the conversation, e.g., the anon 'hoser' comments of a few months past. Hopefully it won't be abused in the way Darvin suggests.
