"This clearly will be an important passageway once it becomes feasible, as it will cut a lot of time off the trip from Europe to Japan and Asia. So it is important for Canada to make it clear to people, in everybody's interests, that we must exercise our sovereignty there," Graham said Sunday.
"We recognize pollution in that area is going to affect us and our people, and it's in the interest of the world community that Canada be in place to control that so that everybody will be protected."
The comments came amid a diplomatic tussle with Denmark over Hans Island, an uninhabited patch of Arctic rock claimed by both countries.
Graham played down suggestions Canada doesn't know what's going on in its northern backyard.
"We have new satellites that we're putting into place to patrol the Arctic. We will be looking at the use of unmanned aerial vehicles," he said.
