La Francophonie: Clouseau À La Rescousse!

Posted on Wednesday, February 08 at 09:16 by gaulois

Steve Martin, le dernier à incarner Clouseau, racontait (accès restraint) incidemment ce matin («Being a boob isn’t as easy as it would seem») dans le National Post sa rencontre avec Peter Sellers peu de temps avant son décès après le flop de Martin dans “The Jerk”: “He came up to me […]and said: “I know you are under a lot of criticism right now, but I know what you are doing.” I felt, says Martin wistfully, “like there was a little torch being passed to me”.

Note: racontait

I just read this through the Google translator, and I can honestly say I still have no idea of what the author is trying to say. Can someone fluent in French please take the time to explain this to me? Is there some politician or investigator named Clouseau? Or is this the author name-calling someone after the Pink Panther? And why?

I gather you do not remember Peter Sellers, Black Edwards or the famous French Interpol inspector called Clouseau that looks for stolen gems. Rent couple of these videos and you will have a great evening.

I have seen the movies when they came out, and I loved them all. What I don't understand is the context of their use in this article. The google translation was just awful, I read it and felt I was missing something. I am not even sure of what point the article was trying to make.

Can someone who speaks french fill me in?

Was posted under humour. Must not have been funny if I have to explain the overall punch. You may have to be somewhat familiar with francophone hors Quebec or special interest group/spokepeople issues.
