Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said the decision by OPG has no bearing on the government's interest in using nuclear power to help meet the province's energy needs.
"We are not ruling out new nuclear, but we are ruling out old, uneconomic nuclear wherever we find it," he told reporters in Banff yesterday, where he was attending the premiers' annual gathering.
The decision not to restart the two units comes at the same time provincial and territorial leaders reached an agreement to develop a pan-Canadian energy strategy. Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams will chair a council on energy.
Mr. McGuinty said a pan-Canadian approach to energy would be similar to the way the country built the railway.
"There are too few things that link this country together," he said.
The committee will consider all viable energy sources to meet future demand for power.
