What The Devil? Prince Of Darkness Is Misunderstood

Posted on Sunday, August 20 at 11:20 by Diogenes
In "Satan: A Biography" (Cambridge Press), Henry Ansgar Kelly puts forth the most comprehensive case ever made for sympathy for the devil, arguing that the Bible actually provides a kinder, gentler version of the infamous antagonist than typically thought. "A strict reading of the Bible shows Satan to be less like Darth Vader and more and more like an overzealous prosecutor," said Kelly, a UCLA professor emeritus of English and the former director of the university's Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. "He's not so much the proud and angry figure who turns away from God as [he is] a Joseph McCarthy or J. Edgar Hoover. Satan's basic intention is to uncover wrongdoing and treachery, however overzealous and unscrupulous the means. But he's still part of God's administration." The view runs in opposition to the beliefs held by many Christians and others about key religious concepts like original sin and the nature of good and evil. Ah, so Satan's attempt at getting Christ to worship him by offering him all the kingdoms of the world was just Satan doing his job?

    I see.

If Satan is just an "overzealous prosecutor" he'd better check his retirement plan.

Last time I checked, being tossed into a lake of fire for all eternity was considered a really bad thing.

Mankind IS Satan and if there is a God(s), she/he must be pleased to watch the self distruction.

Has anyone yet accused Kelly of being possessed by the Devil for making his case?

It is often said that one can be possed by the Devil, but never is it said that one can be possessed by God.

While it is somewhat the "in thing" to do in some circles, mocking those who believe in God or a god does not make the possibility of such a being existing a non-starter.

I'm Christian myself, and got here after examining several alternatives including Atheism over many years.

Some point at the Universe and say it was the work of God, others say it is the logical result of "strings" as put forth by the string theory model.

Seeing as both require faith (no one ever will see a "string" after all) is it crazier to believe in one thing we will never see as opposed to another?

I've made my choice, you make yours.

One is true, the other fiction, and we will only find out which is which after we die.

As a Christian, if I'm wrong I cease to exist. No heaven and no hell, just oblivion.

    As an Atheist...

That you can figure out yourselves.
