Canada Issues Call For UN To Hold Security Council Elections

Posted on Wednesday, July 27 at 00:00 by jensonj
India, Germany, Japan and Brazil are seeking permanent memberships and, in an attempt to gain support from smaller countries, are offering to create five new non-permanent memberships. This would bring to 26 the number of members to the security council, whose permanent members currently are the U.S., Britain, China, France and Russia. But Rock said "permanence is the polar opposite of accountability." Instead, he proposed creating 20 regionally based memberships and allowing countries in each region - Africa, for instance - to regularly elect their representatives. That system would force countries to earn the respect of their peers and would allow more flexibility in global governance, Rock said. "In a changing world . . . it is surely unwise to lock into place arrangements that reflect today's circumstances, when tomorrow may confront us with very different needs," he said. http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2005/07/26/pf-1148643.html

It would do a lot more good if Canada started a movement to eliminate the veto vote from Britain, Russia, France and the United States of America. Banning any Country having one. Maybe then the United Nations would function properly instead of a Political arm of some Nation.

You know that idea of democracy is always so intriguing, but who would vote for the members? I agree the veto vote is not a good thing. But how would an election work, could you end up with an imbalance of influence? Rock gave Canada some interesting and not very good policies, so I wonder about this one?? Wasn't he the mind behind gun control???
