On the basis of what it calls exclusive research, it warns that the insurgency is also exercising a "significant amount of psychological control, gaining more and more political legitimacy in the minds of the Afghan people who have a long history of shifting alliances and regime change".
It says the territory controlled by the Taliban has increased and the frontline is getting closer to Kabul - a warning echoed by the UN which says more and more of the country is becoming a "no go" area for western aid and development workers.
The council goes as far as to state: "It is a sad indictment of the current state of Afghanistan that the question now appears to be not if the Taliban will return to Kabul, but when ... and in what form. The oft-stated aim of reaching the city in 2008 appears more viable than ever and it is incumbent upon the international community to implement a new strategic paradigm before time runs out."
Its 110-page report coincides with an equally severe warning from Oxfam. In a report for the House of Commons International Development Committee the humanitarian and aid agency warns that the security situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating significantly with the country's problems exacerbated by corruption in central and local government.
Senior British and US military commanders privately agree despite their public emphasis on short-term successes against Taliban fighters.

Doubling the present 40,000 NATO troops would be just another PR gimmick sap to mislead the populations of the participating countries.
As I wrote many times in the past years, to "pacify" Afgh. would need half million troops on foot, with garrisons located in every village. The country has no roads and the present mobile forces can not control even the existing roads, because the Taliban hide in the bushes and come out when the convoy is gone.
This present irresponsible waste of human lives and resources can only make the warped brains of people like Bush, Harper & Co. and the arms manufacturers and officer corps happy, but without any logical, historical, or military reasons and purpose.

of the NATO nations currently there. For example, Canada is a bit further from
Afghanistan than the ex-Soviet Union is. The garrisons bring to mind the
imperialistic hey days of one Alexander the Great, arguably one of the world's
pioneering "Globalists."
Yet,the biggest criminals in history are the ones called "great". The more people they killed and enslaved, the "greater" they were.
And so are today's "globalizers", nothing more than criminal colonizers, collectivizers and enslavers, with the perceived power of imaginary capital, while not forgetting the military to do the dirty work.
E.g. Britain's military budget for next year will be 34 billion pounds. 10 days spending on the military budgets of the world would solve all the drinking water problems on all continents, now killing millions. But it jacks up the GDP, so everything is OK in the warped minds of politicians and economists.
And this is what some call "wealth creation" and "civilization"

Second - you do not defeat an enemy by using force alone despite what Admiral Halsey said ... you defeat an enemy by removing their will to fight. The Taliban are doomed and are beginning to realize this when the civilians that they intimidate start fighting back which they have been and which as Canadians we have been helping them learn how to do exactly this. The proof is the fact that many are now asking Karzai to talk whenever your enemy starts wanting to talk you know that they are in a weakened situation. Within a few years the controversies will be over which local governor is making too much money of some mine. Incidentally there is a new invasion going on now in Afghanistan - by the canadian mining companies!
First - The Russian Military had a golden age before Stalin afterwords it went down hill so fast the it beat itself to the grave. In fact half the time they ever raised a weapon in afgahnistan they would fire their weapons like the Taliban - remain hidden behind a wall stretch thier arms and rifle way up then spray bullets everywhere hoping to hit something. This is one of the reasons why will defeat them ... when we shoot we kill. Just like Hiller said the Canadian's Army job is to kill people and we are damn good at it. The Taliban are good guerilla fighters for the most part in that they are quite clever but useless when the stuff hits the fan unless they can convince some kid to strap a bomb onto his back and blow something up the only problem with that strategy is that you have a limited supply. This why we kill so many more of them than they of us. After several years combat only 73 soldiers lost. Every Canadian should be proud of what we are doing and will continue to do despite any sound and fury from the left wing nuts. It is really telling that they just doscovered some Afhan Police headless - but this only goes to strengthen our releationship with the Locals who in turn inform on the Taliban who in turn get killed by us. You wait a few years and you will see.
The Taliban are recruited from the local population, they probably head lopped the collaborator themselves.
"You wait a few years and you will see."
You mean the downward spiral I just showed you will suddenly reverse? I've already waited 6 years for a reversal of the trend, so I guess I'll just have to keep on waiting for this Afghan invasion to be different than all the other Afghan invasions since Alexander the Great ...
