There is no doubt that this is the first step in continental integration. When asked if it was Martin is quoted as saying: "What we are talking about here is not a big bang; we're talking but big progress." The message I got from Martin's last news conference is that while he did not want to give up sovereignty he had no choice. Martin is only doing what the big corporations want not what the people of Canada want. There is no jobs in this for Canadians. It is simply empty rhetoric.

Of course, Martin has not given up nearly enough to make Harper happy.

All Martin could do is react like you might expect Brian Mulroney to act gushing over the Bush ranch!!

It's not legally binding. Only national law is legally binding.

The only role for Canadian parliamentarians under this plan will be to rubber stamp what is determined Washington. Our national government will be meaningless. This is exactly the same plan that the CEO's and Manley, and Stephen Harper have been promoting. This is a totally oligarchic plan that will undermine the last vistages of democracy.

It includes everything from security, to transportation, agricultural biotechnology, capital flows, environment, financial services, insurance, regulations and standards. It even promises reduced taxes for business persons. It is exactly what Tom d'Aquino, and John Manley could want and potentially even much more.

It's not legally binding. The lawyers and the politicians will eventually do away with it.

The responsibility is on the CANADIAN PEOPLE to undermine this deal and any other thatharms Canadian sovereignty. Remember, this is being done with a MINORITY government!!! Hello? Jack Layton? Canada to Jack Layton? Yep, just as I thought...

Anony,

I have no knowledge of Canadian jurisprudence, but on this side of the border, treaty law trumps national legislation; that’s one of the reasons why the government here (under any administration) is more reluctant than most to sign on to international agreements.
