Census Day Today

Posted on Tuesday, May 16 at 11:57 by sthompson
Today is census day and the final day of our census action. We have been inundated with emails expressing support and asking questions and please be aware that we may not be able to reply to all of them immediately. After today we will do our best to continue to keep in touch with and provide support especially to those who are boycotting, and we will keep you posted on any results of the action here on the main page and in the action pages, which will remain up, just not on the main page. And if you haven't already, please remember to edit and send your census form letter. Vive le Canada! This country is not for sale! - Susan

    "Provide support"?

How precisely are you going to "provide support" to a person who hasn't filled the census form out? Are you making a public commitment to cover their legal expenses in the event they face criminal charges? Are you making a public commitment to cover the $500 fine for each of them?

Please clarify the level and extent of your support.

It has been covered in other posts, which you would know if you had taken the time to read them. Basically, everyone is standing on their own, together. What we can do we will do.

I'm NOT sending my census in and to hell with them. This is my issue with my country. I stand with others against fascism and I certainly won't be paying a fine.

"I'm NOT sending my census in" "and I certainly won't be paying a fine."

Well then, in that case you go to jail.

Wait, let me guess, you certainly won't go to jail either. Oh ok, you just tell that to the judge then. That'll make a difference.

You'll find that you'll end up giving far more information about yourself than the census form required, when they strip-search you prior to being put in your cell.

My understanding is that no one has ever gone to jail for refusing to fill out a census form. StatsCan does not want too much bad publicity, and that's exactly what they'll be getting if people start getting tossed into cages. Supposedly there have been small fines, but that's it, and I wonder if even those stories are true. The census cannot function unless people are willingly filling out the forms. It is not practical to verify the information on all of the forms, so uncoerced cooperation is required. If they could tell that the information is false, then there would be no need for a census. If you fear the census police but disagree with the census, you could just fill out the form as you see fit. If you make it look good, they'll never suspect the information is false and that's much worse than not sending it in at all. Providing inaccurate information on a census form is of course against the law, however a few honest mistakes here and there will sometimes happen.

It's called standing up for your principals. Try it, it feels good.
