Lockheed Martin Census Email Form Letter Now Available

And since we ask that if you take part in any other action for the census boycott that you also send this letter, it's also linked from various places on the main census action page: http://census.vivelecanada.ca Once 20 people have sent it, the page will start to display the number of email form letters sent, so you can check back there to see progress. And many thanks to Jesse for doing such a fantastic job on the coding for the letter!

Great, it would be nice if you edited this short posting to see all of it (including the links) on the initial listing, us rural types dont always visit all the "more" bits due to slow connections. Im keeping an eye on this one!

I have posted <a href="http://thecylinder.wordpress.com/2006/04/30/census-2006-boycott/">something</a> on my blogsite. It is just a collage but I am hoping that it will serve to advertise <i>Vive</i>'s boycott and to encourage other bloggers to post something on their site as well, thus sending a strong message of solidarity with the boycott movement. <p> I have added a few links pertaining to Lockheed Martin. As well I have sent the link to <i>Vive</i>'s boycott page to family & friends. <p> P.S. My very special thanks and deep appreciation to <i>Vive</i> for this initiative!

OK, Rural, I edited the post to ensure the most important link, the link to the email form letter, was included in the first bit rather than once you click "more". The rest of the info was not super-important anyway so left that after "more".

Hope that helps a little. I'm in a rural area and I'm on dial-up myself so I understand your concern there.

Thanks FuGaia, it certainly helps when bloggers post info on their own and links back. If nothing else it raises awareness that the issue is there. That is the whole principle behind our ongoing Red and White Ribbon campaign for example and we believe it works.

So thanks for your help and the great post!

When we get some time we are going to make some banners and link them to your census sub-domain. We will also do a newsletter mailing - at almost 13000 subscribers hopefully some also take part. Should be done by monday evening.

On another note - is anyone going to absolutely refuse to fill in any part of the census? I know I am. And I could lose my livelihood if I get a criminal record from it, but that is a chance I am willing to take.

Lockheed Martin's airplanes, missiles etc are killing thousands in an illegal war as we speak, and they will also do the same on the all but guaranteed war on Iran. As an informed citizen it is my duty to refuse to aid and help abet them in their killing of innocents. If it means a fine and or jail time - so be it. It would be interesting to bring this before a judge and argue the case as one of personal conviction. I and others have already said it, but it is worth repeating - no blood for stats.

I am far from a pacifist, but there is right and wrong. And by all international laws, standards, norms and precedents, the war on Iraq is illegal. Lockheed Martin is helping perpetuate that war, and as such, I cannot in good faith support them.

For others thinking of doing the same thing - make sure you know what you are getting yourself into before you make any rash decisions. If you are even a slight bit unsure - just do as countmeout suggests - and do the bare minimum, and be sure to write, email and/or fax your MP and tell them of your displeasure.

Good work Vive - empire and the sellout of Canada is happening in gradual steps, and this census is but a small cog in their machine. We must stand in their way, and it must start somewhere, so let it be here and now.

I will refuse any part of the census, until foreign arms manufacturers have no chance at my personal data.

"And I could lose my livelihood if I get a criminal record from it, but that is a chance I am willing to take."

If that's what people are worried about, don't be. Many companies do check criminal records, but actually pay attention too. Just because you cheated on your taxes (for an example of a non-violent and non-breach-of-trust crime) doesn't make you a 'security risk' (which is what they should really be checking for). Comapnies that can't make that distinction, I believe, aren't worth working for.

Otherwise, Stats Canada would not of hired Lockheed Martin, now, would they? Deep down, I really appreciate the irony that if you or I got a criminal record from not filling out our census information, there is the possibility that LM might not hire us.

Thanks Roy, good points all. And we would certainly very much appreciate a mailing out to your list to help spread the word.

FYI for anyone who is wondering, maximum sentence for refusing to complete the census is supposed to be $500 or 3 months in jail. Could depend on your judge, and your particular case.

We're working hard to try to get some legal help lined up in advance for people who may be charged, but we can't guarantee it just yet, so yes, please consider the consequences very carefully and make your own choice.

We are also offering numerous completely legal ways to take action on our action page along with this form letter, and as Roy mentioned, partnering with CountMeOut.ca.

I don't know if there has been a court case before where even one person refused to complete the census on grounds of conscientious objection--so it will be interesting to see what happens when a number of those of us willing to face the potential consequences completely boycott on those grounds.

When signing the letter will only one name per email address be accepted?

AFAIK, as long as both names fit in the space provided you could sign both to the spot where it says "Concerned Canadian". Then both would appear at the end of the form letter. You're mainly limited by only having space for one email address and one address.

Hmm, according to the gov't and CCPA, Lockheed doesn't have access to data. However, they will be doing all the printing. Call me stupid but, how are they going to able to print data they don't have?

I smell weasel words! I think we're supposed to assume that we're just getting the hardware for printing from them - but that would have been covered under the part that says they are supplying hardware. It would also have been described as print instead of print.

A little bird told me they also are responsible for the back end of the Web site, so they have access to everyone's data who fills out the form online.

I can think of 3 ways that the data being printed can be intercepted. I'll bet too there are 3 more that I don't know about that defence contractors have access to.

I linked up the census boycott on a Globe&Mail story in the commentaries about a bogus e-mail to francos that made their headline: see <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060501.wcenss0501/BNStory/National/?page=rss&id=RTGAM.20060501.wcenss0501">Bogus e-mail targets francophone census</a> <p> Interesting that the mainstream medias have not picked up on the boycott story yet but have picked up on a bogus email.
