Wow. Was that ever a) gross and b) sensationalized.<p> Yes, DU is bad. Very bad. But not for the reasons they cite.<p> Natural Uranium is present in most mineral rocks all over the planet and is made up of isotopes Uranium-235 (U235) and Uranium-238 (U238). Natural Uranium is about 1% U-235 and 99% U-238. U-235 is good for bombs and is 99.3 times more radioactive than U-238. U-238 is what's left over when you remove the U-235 and is what's used in DU weapons. U-238 produces radiation in the Alpha Particle, Beta Particle and Gamma Rays. Mostly Alpha Particles though. Alpha particles can be blocked by paper. Beta Particles will be blocked by a leather jacket or boots. Gamma rays will pass through your body, and up to 2' of concrete. It will cause a particle to decay, causing bad radiation or 'ionizing' radiation.<p> The problem with U-238 is the same as for Lead, Mercury and other heavy metals. It's a poison. Plutonium is the worst offender. It produces extreme quantities of ionizing radiation, but in quantities less than 1 gram, can kill 100,000 people due to it's toxicity.<p> Calling these wars 'nuclear' is a bit like saying we're under a sustained nuclear attack because the sun is overhead. Like a building with asbestos in the floor tiles. U-238 isn't a problem until it becomes a dust. It's not like it causes people to glow in the dark.<p> Yea, I know. Pointing out the actual causes of something shouldn't downplay the message. All I got from that *flash* presentation was the same thing I get if I watch Fox for a half hour, or seeing this weeks big sale in another 'The Brick' ad. Hype. Propaganda.<p> The sun does cause more good and damage than background ionizing radiation, but I don't see them blaming the sun for the condition of those babies. Did you ever consider that skin cancer and global warming are caused by the same thing? The Sun may be getting hotter due to an as yet unknown trend in the solar cycles. Notice all the solar flare activity in the last month or so? Calling a natural process of a lifeless stellar object an 'attack' is another example of 'Hype'. DU was develped by the USAs version of German mad scientist Professor Mengele. It\'s right up there with cluster bombing & Agent Orange, and a civilised world not intimidated by the USA would have an international treaty to ban its use.
