Should City Of Vancouver Host A World Peace Forum

Posted on Thursday, October 23 at 12:01 by Elsie Dean
Do you think U.S. militarism is threatening people around the world? The illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq has unleashed untold suffering and weakened international controls over aggression. The deployment of National Missile Defence (Star Wars) threatens us with a new arms race; and the U.S.-led world arms trade is once again on the rise. Militarism not only threatens ours and our childrens' safety, it is putting our environment at risk. Military expenditures are robbing cities and other levels of government of the funds necessary for social programs and sustainable human development. Do we need a time and place to talk directly to one another? People and whole cities across the globe have mobilized--the spring demonstrations against the invasion of Iraq were the largest in world history. The internet was an indispensable tool in organizing efforts but can the Internet replace face-to-face, people-to-people dialogue? Is it not time to take stock, to bring together representatives of the "other superpower" the world's peoples, to tell their stories, to sing, to dance, to strategize and to march for peace together? Is Vancouver City the place to do this? It does have a progressive city council that has a mandate until November 2005. And the city has a tradition of peace activism. But perhaps such an event should be held elsewhere? Can we together gather the resources necessary to put on such an event and to help peoples of developing countries, or the South, come to Vancouver? On November 24, the City's Peace and Justice committee will be making its recommendation to city council. Let us know before then what you think. Please send your views to . Sincerely Ellen Woodsworth City Councillor and Vice-chair Vancouver City Peace and Justice Committee clrwoodsworth@city.vancouver.bc.ca

The internet is as valuable a tool as any for means of communication. but nothing can replace the solidarity of face to face dialogue, and nothing is as empowering as literally seeing people lock arms and march for something just! Vancouver and Canada is a great place to start what could be an annual event!

This idea is extremely dangerous and will only serve to attract riff-raff to the city of Vancouver. Trade Ministers, Corporate Executives, and Media Whores from around the world will congregate in Vancouver to protest this threat to democracy. A huge wall and legions of security will be needed to keep the assorted personages from attacking and ripping limb from limb the self-proclaimed \"activists\" and representatives of civil society who are usurping the democratic right of money to rule the world.

\'self-proclaimed \"activists\" and representatives of civil society who are usurping the democratic right of money to rule the world.\'

This is the saddest comment I have seen! We all should be activists, the word only means to be actively seeking to improve our world. But the democratic right of money to rule the world, is just purely disgusting! Money doesn\'t do anything, money is a tool and in the hands of responsible people it can enhance, improve and sustain people; in the hands of the greedy, self-serving elitist, who wish to keep the \'people\' in chains to serve the needs of the rich, it is dangerous.

I beleive you misunderstood the person\'s commments. They were being sarcastic.

Absolutely! I would also recommend that each region have it\'s own chapter, that could organise on a local level. Terrorism is on the rise and it\'s not the small cells that are the ones to worry about, it\'s the large offensive powers that muscle their way in and then send in their corporate cronies to tap the new found wealth!

Few if any of the Vancouver city council should be allowed to have anything to do with this conference.

Why you ask? Because they have declared war on the homeless and unemployed. They promised to address homelessness, unemployment, and drug use in the downtown core. While they have made strides in places, many strides have been backwards.

squeegee kids are beaten and harrassed by vancouver city police - enforcing city rules. Homeless are pushed from area to area and arrrested if they resist. The council has done sweet nothing to address the root causes, and little more to remedy the current state of affairs beyone passing more regressive bylaws.

Other than that - it is a very wonderful idea and should be held in vancouver. We have a very large activist community here on the wet coast.

If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.
