Population health specialist professor Wayne Hall, from the University of Queensland, welcomed the rankings, saying it put the dangers of various drugs in perspective.
The biggest revelation was the extent of dangers posed by alcohol and tobacco, Prof Hall wrote in the same journal.
"This shows that we should certainly be putting a lot more time and money into alerting the community to the harms that they cause, especially alcohol," he said.
The analysis also proved that cannabis was less harmful than the Class A drugs it was commonly grouped together with.

I have to assume they are looking at health affects in terms of raw numbers of people affected due to the popularity of the drug, rather than looking at the direct toxicity or addictiveness of the drug itself. That'll be like ranking the consumption of cooked chicken meat to be more harmful than eating festering road kill because out of the millions who eat chicken meat everyday, some get sick, but since almost no one eats festering road kill (I hope), almost no one ever gets sick by comparison.
the report is for sale at the Lancet if you want it<br />

"The criteria used to determine harmfulness were: the physical harm to the individual user caused by the drug; the tendency of the drug to induce dependence; and the effect of the drug's use on families, communities and society."<br />

Yes I do smoke as my father did before me. The relaxing atmosphere of a good pipe does me better then the sedatives of those taken by prescription. I'm not suggesting that my health is in such great shape because I do smoke the pipe. I am suggesting that taking all kinds of medication for all that ails you, is doing more harm. I don't take so much as even an aspirin and yet aware of the surplus supply most people have in a medicine chest, for every ailment they mave have had or expect to have.
I had often said that in my experience as an embalmer and Coroners technican, I have seen many healthy people on the slab. Many non smokers as well.

the market and mind behind the use of drugs in our society among other <br />
things<br />
<a href="http://www.flip4mac.com/download.htm">http://www.flip4mac.com/download.htm</a><br />
<br />
One thing that really got my attention is the concept that many, too many <br />
people are drugged for things that are normal human behavior. People have <br />
come to accept that sadness or anger, or anxiety over 'real' situations are not <br />
acceptable...the robotic state is preferable, easier to fit into our society and <br />
easier for the 'man' to control us. It may be a key to what is commonly taken <br />
as apathy...perhaps the masses are just over happy drugged? <br />
<br />
<p>---<br>"aaaah and the whisper of thousands of tiny voices became a mighty deafening roar and they called it 'freedom'!"' Canadians Acting Humanely at home & everywhere
Yeah I debated that part. I just could not resist echoing the stereotype drinking bum who wears only underwear all day long, primarily featured on "reality" TV shows like COPS.
I won't argue that smoking (anything) or drinking alcohol or taking mind altering drugs is a great healthy thing to do - because it's clearly not, but in moderation I fail to see much concern especially when FREE people are making that choice for themselves. Everyone has the right to do as they please with their own body and mind and to hell with what the "law" decrees.
There are a lot of really bad things going on in this world that make drug abuse look like childs play (and I include some "properly" prescribed drugs in that category). We see the wars of conquest in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the "little" wars going on in other countries such as Haiti. The intentional killing and misery aside, DU munitions spread nuclear waste across the land, and air born DU has been shown to travel all over the world.
As a FREE man, I did not agree to inhale that shit!
as apathy...perhaps the masses are just over happy <<
It's a good point. Nobody likes misery and will take or do anything to prevent it or end it. We live in a society where drug stores have sales, the media get millions for advertising the newest remedies and the Drug companies are extremely wealthy. Mean while the medical system has problems keeping up with the demand. It seems few see the irony in that.

Expect little from life and get more from it.
I whole heartedly agree! (with some added bits)<br />
<br />
<br />
As a FREE man, I did not agree to inhale that shit!<br />
I’m gonna work backwards from “As a FREE man, I did not agree to inhale that shit!” focusing “that shit”<br />
Or. Hell, focus on “Inhale shit!<br />
<br />
I will continue in the vernacular of the last sentence of your post because there is where I detect a turn, to where, I am uncertain, and to me, a turn, none the less.<br />
As FREE men, we inhale shit 24/7~ There is no escaping it except via special chambers through which anything inhale able passes, We’re talking HEPA here!<br />
Now all we’re left with is Visual shit, Auditory shit, Kinaesthetic shit, and Gustatory shit<br />
There is a truth in the old joke, “Life is like a shit sandwich, The more bread you have the less shit you have to eat.”<br />
Sill working bottom to of your post the really bad things that go on in this world assault the senses to the point of escapism by any means necessary depending on factors we are ignorant of, in some cases.<br />
There are recourses that when applied alter or even dramatically shift those instances that lead to escapism. And here is a BUT! But not ALL sense altering (mind altering) experiences are done to escape, some are done to reach Higher States of Being.<br />
A question< Have you not ever experienced an altered state of being by Listening to Gregorian Chants? By gazing on the works of the Masters? By being embraced in a loving relationship, (or even a tawdry one
In order to find misery in the world I to look no farther than my neighbour or the cities homeless or the crack whores and sundry coconuts (slang for cocaine abusers) the victim of spousal abuse, sexual abuse, paedophilia, alcoholism, a crooked judiciary.& national police force. The list goes on, and HEPA ain’t gonna help!.<br />
<br />
Continuing on up,<br />
I see a line between use and abuse and where abuse occurs, and when you scratch that persons outer shell and armouring and find inside a person whose beyond their limit, you help them!<br />
A system of governance is judged by how well it looks after its weakest, whether that weakness is emotional, financial, or all else. <br />
Now, to the beginning statement!<br />
I have been beating the same drum about the dangers of Big Pharma’s products from about age thirteen or fourteen.<br />
Freedom, too is the freedom to explore the boundaries that lie within us as well as those set for us by the same wonderful people that bring us Law education religion commerce banks and SHIT!!! <br />
