Help Kill Politics In Canada

None of that really gets put to the voters. Instead we're given the choice between one brand of homogenized sludge or another, more of the same. Tax and spend, redistribute other people's property. Stick our noses in other countries affairs.

There are no viable alternatives in Canada. The Liberal party is just the Conservatives minus the neo-con ideology, and the NDP's are a pack of raving pinkos. The Green party is an emerging alternative that will eventually brush aside the NDPs on the left, the only alternative for the protest vote, for an end of politics-as-usual, the only party that stands for something that isn't positively brain dead in this country is the Libertarian Party.

In a nutshell Libertarians believe that everybody should be free to pursue their own interests provided their activities do not infringe on anbody else's rights to same. Pretty simple, pretty sensible. Why we are not living this way in a supposedly progressive western society is utterly beyond me. Libertarians believe for the most part, that if there should be any government at all, it should be a minimal one in place to protect the property rights of it's citizenry and the sovereignty of the country from external aggressors. The Wikipedia page on Libertarianism is a good primer/digest on the subject.

The Canadian Libertarian Party is now fighting for its life. Every three years political parties need to get 250 signatures filed to retain their political party status and the Libertarian Party is about 100 signatures away and has until the end of the month to do it.

What do you mean help kill politics in Canada? I would say it is almost dead. People have lost faith and this NEW CONSERVATIVE PARTY are doing everything right to make it happen.

I can hardly wait for the day we in Canada get to reform and put the boots to these liars and their parties.

Not sure if I truncated the post or if the mods did but the URL to signup for the Libertarians is http://www.libertarian.ca/english/libertarian-party-join.html

Under copyright & fair use doctorine, we aren't allowed to post entire articles, unless the site we are copying allows for full reprints without permission.

So, all such articles are truncated at around 1/3 of the article.

    A pile of crap..........

Politics are indeed very sick in Canada and all over the world, thanks to the miseducation of economists and bought politicians, but these so called "libertarians" are nuts.

Nothing more, or less, than the reawakening of the ultimate Dickensian laissez faire system of the strongest dogs.

I hate politics with a passion, but wouldn't give these nutcases the time of day.

I'd suspect that if the party is on its 'last legs' then there is a reason, namely, most people don't agree with it. I certainly don't, to say that a 'minimal government' should only exist not to make sure we have decent health care but to make sure my neighbour has the right to pour sulphur dioxide on his lawn if he wants to (while I have to prove that its harmful to me), and ensure that corporations which 'bought' its property by crooked land deals that robbed the natives of their rightful land sounds pretty repulsive to me.

The NDP did better in the last election than they have for years, so ideology aside, there is little evidence that the Greens will brush them aside. There is as much evidence that since the NDP always has had a strong environmental component it is actually the other parties who stand to lose the most, and under the last Green leader thats exactly what most were saying-that the Greens were just conservatives who actually had an environmental plan.

To keep the site from being a place whose only purpose is to shout out how stupid everybody else is for not agreeing with personal views, the situation with a minority government is probably the most favourable outcome that has been seen for years. Mulroney rammed through free trade and the GST, Chretien lied about just about everything, meanwhile his majority rammed through massive social spending cuts with little debate.

Now, that's pretty much a thing of the past. The political leaders can hardly do anything without worrying about he political cost. It unfortunately gives more power to the media, but still its a marked improvement. The environment is pretty much the main theme of virtually every level of government now, none of that is thanks to politicians but to canadians whose groups now have some clout thanks to the minority government of four parties-which is far better than the two down south in many ways.

That's not to say there aren't huge problems, but voter turnout in the last election went up again, and minority governments have much more media coverage, which can't help but keep some people at least marginally interested.

So buck up dudes, this isn't the apocalypse.

I have some reservations as well, and these reservations tend to become reinforced when I cannot get Libertarians to explain some of the underlying philosophy.............
