UBC

Second event of the day is UBC's announcement of housing placements. For the last few years, the university hasn't been able to provide housing to all those who are eligible. And now they've implemented a lottery-style system, which is fair enough I guess. But the real issue is this: While tuition rises and UBC's oh-so-important maclean's ranking drops like a dead weight, UBC is spending its money on developing the ENDOWMENT LANDS into commercially available buildings. This includes moving the outdoor olympic-size swimming pool to make room for a mall/apartment building that will be way too expensive for students, leaving it available to private investors. The other buildings going up around campus have, to the best of my knowledge little, if any, value to the common student. So here's the summary of events at ubc... here's why it's been in the news so much, why so many students are pissed off, why the current students are warning future students to stay away: The administration is raising tuition to deal with government funding cuts. Meanwhile, Martha Piper (president of UBC - you'll see her in federal politics in a few years, I'll bet) is spending the money on commercial buildings on the ENDOWMENT LANDS to sell to rich investors instead of building affordable housing. -KY

I know, it is bad and getting worse. I\'m at UVic now and considering where I
want to apply to Grad school. I\'m having second thoughts about UBC.

UVic has problems too, but at least new student housing is being built and
next year every first year student will be guaranteed a place.

I like how UBC artificially kept class sizes small & made up excuses to keep students out of programs to raise their MacLean\'s rating. I think that\'s great! (haha) I also like how universities encourage people to apply so they have more applications to turn down to appear more selective/prestigious.

    To the University student:
it is unfortunate that these things should bother you. To be a success at post secondary school, find 5 good friends, or collaboraters. Then develop a competitive nature within your group, divided among the various projects/curriculum. Always keep in the back of your mind the commercial viability of your work. As the time rolls on, seek more formal partnerships, get to know venture capatilists (that don\'t have a fascist, new world order bent). When you graduate, hit the streets running....

I read the stuff you say about housing and loans and olympic pools, ... and it\'s fluff... you\'re being set up to fail, my little powder puff.

Also learn the HIDDEN CURRICULUM!! I didn\'t learn it fast enough so I kind of paid for it. I\'ll still graduate though so I won\'t have totally wasted my time.
\"If I think back about my experience, there\'s a dark spot there. That\'s what school generally is, I suppose. It\'s a period of regimentation & control, part of which involves direct indoctrination, providing a system of false beliefs. But more importantly I think, is the manner & style of preventing & blocking independent & creative thinking & imposing hierarchies and competitiveness & the need to excel, not in the sense of doing as well as you can, but doing better than the next person. Schools vary, of course, but I think that those features are commonplace. I know that they\'re not necessary, because, for example, the school I went to as a child wasn\'t like that at all. I think schools could be run quite differently. That would be very important, but I really don\'t think that any society based on authoritarian hierarchic institutions would tolerate such a school system for long.\" - Chomsky

I don't put much stock in those ratings anymore. Wasn't it the Globe last year that gave MacMaster's medical program top ratings, and MacMaster doesn't have a medical program?<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />"The greatest price of not participating in politics is being governed by your inferiors." Rightwing math at work - cut the grants on the premise that its going to fund new spaces at college and universities around the province. Sounds great on the surface, but who can now afford to pay for those spaces?

Its certainly not going to be those with low incomes!

And they have the nerve to brag about balancing the budget! They hacked and slashed everything that anyone making less $50,000 per year depends on. They have gone out of their way to make life easier for the top 10% of the province and utterly miserable for the bottom half.

Its only going to get better too. They are looking to foist off control of BC Hydro (one third already gone) real soon as well. Geez, look what happened in Ontario for a clue as to why NOT TO DO THAT!

I normally dont get all that upset at the sight of a person but Campbell makes me shiver. The man walks with a smirk and a strut; must be his neoconservative way of saying he is proud to have turned this province backwards 100 years.
But hey, I can send my 12 year old off to work in a factory to make ends meet thanks to Gordo!

More assaults on social and economic justice! Deny people education, deny freedom, equality, and justice. In the old days it was- women, minorities, keep out! Now even more so its- if you`re poor, you`ve got no business thinking you can achieve something!

This sort of thing is happening at the U of A as well, though nobody is really surprised (it\'s Alberta, after all).
For example, all of the lecture theatres in the new engineering building are named after corporate sponsors.

I could have sworn I saw an article on the CBC news about riots in Montreal over student grants as well? Yet when I went to look for something on the Internet I couldn\'t find anything. That was yesterday. The police were firing tear gas and the students were throwing the canisters back at the police. They were justifiably upset at Charet for breaking election promises as has every provincial liberal government in their last elections.

    So did I dream that?

No you didn\'t nightmare that, I saw it too, on the news...very bad democracy at work!

It\'s such a creepy idea to deny people the right to an education. They\'re setting themselves up to have all the power - having only the rich educated in an economic structure that requires specific education for any chance at economic success. Takes money to make money, right?

BC students eliminate LIB'erals at election time and they only had to
mark that little ballot box and presto problem gone!
