Martin Faces Scandal, Anger

This is probably because while he might have been the piano player, he was also working the cash register, handling the payroll, and, as a very senior minister from Quebec, doing everything in his power to keep customers coming in the door."

Martin is also pointing the finger at his staff (nice, isn't he?). Sure didn't take long for the scapegoating to start. Funny, normally the defence is "I was just following orders." What's Martin trying to say? "I was just GIVING orders"??? Good luck with that defence, Paul.

I have been awaiting this report since it was clear the Cretien dissolved parlament and retired specifically to block this report coming out on his watch. Let me just say that I was mouth foaming angry at it. And now, <a href='http://www.canada.com/national/story.asp?id=3BA708D1-83F7-4AD4-A756-386AE007203F'>The PM</a> is saying he knew about this in 2002?<p> And he was acting so surprised yesterday when this was made public? And he had access to the report since January? Horse pucks. He knew about it, and he did nothing since 2002. If the CFO of any private company knew about such things, they would be fired. If they *didn't* know, they did not show knowledge of their departments responsibilities, and would be fired.<p> I still say all involved should look at jail time. It's the only way to cut them off from their golden parachutes and lavish pensions. Alphonse Galliano, who got a retroactive raise by Cretin to the tune of $185,000 a year, will still get his golden parachute from being an ambassador, plus his $90,000 a year pension from being a cabinet minister. It's outrageous! And the $90,000 in gold watches Galliano bought from Birks, but instead used GroupAction as a middle man! They earned $16,000 to be Galliano's errand boy!<p> And let's not forget what the media is not focusing on - $48 BILLION surplus in EI (but we all still have to pay it!), and Indian Affairs losing $1.2 BILLION in land claims settlements. And the $5 BILLION in surplus this year only goes to prove my axiom that LIEberals can't count.<p> Let's see if I can work my foaming mouth into a hard lather. . . <p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />"The greatest price of not participating in politics is being governed by your inferiors." Absolutely Dr. Caleb, we should all be outraged, this is what we have suspected all along but now their is proof! Why can\'t the auditor general go back further to the PC gov\'s contracts etc. This also brings up other contracts, such as the census, how was it decided, who is going to benefit???? There are more questions than answers , but I agree jail time and no pension, no more pilfering the Canadians pockets, while telling us there is no money for health care, schools etc etc.....

I was listening to Jack Layton say that Martin should post-pone a spring election until this is sorted out...I wonder what the strategy is there? Wouldn\'t an election now, guarantee the NDP and CAP would get the most seats, or at least alot more than prior to this scandal??? Any thoughts...

Election *NOW*. I've been waiting 11 years to toss these bozos out.<p> I can't believe that I think almost fondly about the Mulroney years. I wanted to toss him out just as badly as I do these liberals. I have always voted conservative, and the Reform was a welcome change from Mulroney's Conservatives, but with the state of the conservatives, and lack of any other 'red tories', I don't know who to vote for.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />"The greatest price of not participating in politics is being governed by your inferiors." C.A.P. won\'t get any seats under first-past-the-post regardless, but the NDP should NOT want an election to be delayed too long, in my opinion.

Remember how Bob Rae\'s NDP government won power in 1990 in Ontario, simply by playing the mediocre Consevatives and Liberals against each other. Rae was as shocked as anyone when he won, and my guess is that could just happen to Layton.

I think the NDP has a chance to EASILY become the opposition, which is good, and anythign more, who knows?

All I do know is the Liberals are not nation builders, they are NATION DESTROYERS, IGNORANT OF HISTORY, and disrespectful to their own country!

post-poning the election may not be a bad idea. As much as it may seem in the media that this scandal is hurting the voter support for the liberals, the fact is they are still in the lead.

Many people who support the liberals now, still believe that \'b.s\' coming out of Martin\'s mouth. These people need more proof. I think that the NDP figures that if they post-pone the election the truth will be revealed that Martin knew about this 100 million dollar spending.

If the election is post-pone there are three different scandals with Martin. 1. Bulk membership 2. CSL 3. Sponsorship spending. Some people need more proof.

I hope the election still happens in the early spring. When I saw Layton\'s comments the first thing I thought was that he was afraid the Conservatives, newly off a leadership race, would still be able to make too much hay with the scandals in the spring. My second was that he thinks the mess in BC would definitely include Martin after the spring and wanted that to happen before any election, not after.

I think this latest scandal is really a symptom of problems with our political system and wonder how many times similar things have happened in the past and have gone undetected or were ignored because they were smaller.

Now the spin really begins, Martin\'s people say one thing, then Martin holds a press conference and say something different. He claims that although he was the finance minister and a minister in Quebec, he was kept out of the loop....duh, if you aren\'t in the loop, don\'t sign the cheques...this is not rocket science...and he wants in on star wars, which is rocket science!!!!Call an election, please, NOW!!!!

    Reverend,

I agree with you. I think that putting the election off to a later date is Layton thinking that Martin will be linked to the scandal in BC. And he will probably even show as being involved in the sponsorship program and CSL as well.

Doc, you`re thinking fondly of the Mulroney years? You`re scaring me! Mulroney, Chretien, Martin, are all... THE SAME!!

This scandal is getting uglier and uglier, but I think we would be wise to keep on pressing to have all the details revealed, the scandals of the liberal gov are becoming more public, as they start talking about, the various Quebec political dealings, the gun registry, the sponsorship, the CSL dealings, etc. I just hope they also start looking into campaign contributions, and elections themselves.

I still don\'t understand why there wasn\'t more inquiry into the Free Trade deals, the Airbus deals, etc. Perhaps the Mulroney gov was more straight forward, perhaps there were no back room deals or money changing hands, I certainly never heard anything in the news? What is the time frame for prosecuting politicians or gov officials for things like this?

It is looking alot like we\'ve had problems for many years, maybe now Canadians will start to demand more clarity and less rhetoric??

CAP doesn\'t have any candidates to vote for. It\'s a shame, but that\'s why I am spoiling my vote next time, there is no party out there that has my interests as part of their platform.

Yes Jim I agree whole heartedly, jail time for the crooks, but you know the only ones going to jail, or any other penalty will be the little guys, the scapegoats, nobody in the party that is key to the future of the plan, will even be mentioned! That is the sad part...faith, trust, not a chance!
