CBC Signal Could Grow Faint

The Canadian Broadcasting Act stipulates that "CBC programming should be made available throughout Canada by the most appropriate and efficient means." But because the CBC didn't have time to set aside money for new transmitters some viewers will be left in the dark. Figures differ but as many as seven per cent and as few as three per cent of current CFJC viewers will lose their CBC signal. "There are no plans at this point [for transmitters]," Mattocks said. "Normally when you do disaffiliate it is a three year process, part of the process is budgeting money for the transmitters." CFJC Kamloops is owned by the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group and has been a CBC affiliate for 47 years. The station has applied to end its affiliation and broadcast more programming from its sister station CHBC-Kelowna, a Global affiliate. Mattocks said the application to disaffiliate came as a surprise because the CBC had just reached a new deal with Pattison Broadcasting. But the CBC wanted the station to carry more than the current 43.5 hours a week of CBC programming that CFJC airs. Pattison Broadcasting felt they could attract more advertising revenue by airing Global shows rather than CBC ones. http://www.merrittherald.com/portals-code/list.cgi?paper=19&cat=23&id=550113&more=
