"What I would like to see is, obviously, the United States government come clean with its version of events, to acknowledge, I would hope, the deficiencies and the inappropriate conduct that occurred in this case, particularly vis a vis interrelations with the Canadian government," he told reporters. In a telephone conversation, Bush expressed concerns about the case and said he would reply to the letter, Harper said. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/06/AR2006100600783.html

U.S. and Syrian officials refused to cooperate in the Canadian inquiry.

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales's claimed the Justice Department was not responsible for sending Canadian software engineer Maher Arar to a Syrian prison in 2002.

"Well, we were not responsible for his removal to Syria," Gonzales replied. "I'm not aware that he was tortured"

U.S. law prohibits sending anyone, even on national security grounds, to a country where he or she is likely to be tortured. Although the State Department has long branded Syria a human rights violator, then-Attorney General John D. Ashcroft responded to Canadian protests by saying the Syrian government had assured that Arar would be treated humanely.

These assurances from the Syrian government a member of the American designated axis’s of evil that Bush says can’t be trusted but they believe them anyway if only in this matter alone?

Gonzales also repeated the administration's denial that Arar's removal was part of the practice of secret "renditions" of terrorism suspects to third countries where they could be more aggressively interrogated. "That is not what happened here," he said. "It was a deportation."

Is it not the PM Harpers point that Canada should be supportive of US foreign Policy and not to interfere by criticizing?

The ONLY reason Harper and his band of US sympathizers is even going through this exercise at all is because they have no choice in the matter.

It's out of their control, and this is the only way they can even hope to wash their hands of their own complicity in this whole affair.

In short, it's a spin control exercise.

The ONLY reason Harper and his band of US sympathizers is even going through this exercise at all is because they have no choice in the matter<<

It's a token gesture, of no value and without remorse. Harper is not even trying to make many brownie points. Quite simply, he don't give a dam. I'm certain it won't be in his words nor his signature. Simply a formal block letter with an offical rubber stamp. "He has a choice" but it's not one of any merit.

Bush expressed concerns about the case and said he would reply to the letter"

    Dear Steve:
Well Steve how's it going? You know any new Muslim jokes? When you coming up again, I've got a new bicycle for you to look at. I won't be back to Ottawa unless you get some better restaurants there. Ha ha. Thanks for the letter, by the way. Rumsfield used it to start a fire. It's getting chilly out. I hear a few of your boys got shot up in Afganystein. Good thing you put a squash on this pay-if you-can't-work thing before it go out of hand.
My secretary says her fingers are getting tired, so I'll have to end this now.

Say howdy to the good people of Kanader from your pal.

    Dear Steve:

I'm happy to hear that Arar got rescued from those evil terrorists that kidnapped him and tortured him.

As you know, we'll keep on working closley together to make sure we have even more success stories to broadcast over our controled news networks.

I know we have many FBI agents in Canada sitting in on meetings while your guys talk about suspected terrorists. We'll use those unfounded accusations to make sure that any terrorists we manage to get our hands on are disappeared and tortured in secrecy. That'll learn em good!

The more of these terrorists we permanently disappear, the less we'll see of unfortunate cases such as Arar's.

    Your Pal

and just another reason we need more store front offices for them in Kanader. They complain already of having to wear toques & parkas. You think we should increase their danger pay? You are the country that use to be north of us, right?

I'd bet anything that with this official protest, both gvernments sent a secret message to their brethren in Syria:

".....we sent you this guy to be killed, but you let us down! Now look all the problems your lack of cooperation is causing us! If you insist on not cooperating, we won't send you any more for rendition in the the future. Can't you get it through your heads that we haven't yet reached the stage, when we can act freely, without some idiots raising their noise? We're getting there, but it will take some time! "

"Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay was due to send a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Friday to protest U.S. officials' actions in the case, as recommended after a high-level inquiry, Harper said."

    Dear Condi,
    Are you naked?
