Did anyone catch the CBC \'CounterSpin\' debate last night?

One of the better counterspins to date. It was on the conservative party merger.

CA MP Randy White in my estimation made an ass of himself and a was doing a good jingoistic copy of George Bush. To the PC members present he stated - \"you have to decide whether you want to be a conservative or a liberal\"... right out of the American Republican playbook.

Orchard was subdued but cool and collected - though you could see he was just a tad irratated listening to the weak excuses and veiled threats from the CA members.

Orchards case is very strong as its clear the constitution of the PC party is being violated in the march to merge.

Democracy is still about the will of the Majority. If Orchard wants to take his marbles and go home, that's up to him. If he wants his ideas to have a place in the party, he should learn to compromise.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain

How could he when the pro-merger crowd is going around the very constitution of the PC party? They are stacking the deck in such a fashion that there is no fair play and room to find common ground. <br><br> Its clear that the differences between the Orchard crowd and PC stalwarts and the pro-merger crowd will not be paved over and in fact will rip the party in two. <br><br> http://www.davidorchard.com/online/2do-index.html<br><br> The above is Orchards reasoning.<br><br><p>---<br>If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.

I can\'t remember the former N&L premier\'s name but I thought what he said about what the membership is going to vote for made sense. Just why ARE they voting for/against the merger? What policies are up for discussion that would make someone vote one way or another? Also, I always laugh when I hear people try to say that Orchard isn\'t a (small c) conservative. Most of the people who try to say that believe in \"free trade\" which I think is lifting restrictions on things like money crossing the border, which is of course more in line with classical liberalism & is the opposite of conservatism. Just look it up. So the people who say that belong in the Liberal Party which is what they\'ve usually stood for. Orchard was probably the only traditional, old-school conservative in the room that night.

I don't disagree with Mr Orchard. If they are doing an end run around their own rules, they should be held to task. But everyone that wants to merge will hold it against him.<p> If they aren't allowed to merge, what's stopping them from re-writing the Alliance constitution to reflect the two parties views, everyone defecting, leaving Mr. Orchard alone?<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain

    DrCaleb,

I don\'t think Orchard will be left alone. And I DO think the people that want to joint the Alliance should just leave the PC and join them. I have never been able to understand the hoopla that\'s being made over this \"merger\". Go quietly and join the Alliance for God\'s sake already! This public display is pure politics and revolting to boot.

In terms of what is just? I think Orchard has a case for keeping the PC party for those who want the PC Party. Smashing the PC party is not going to help the new Concervative party and as far as I can tell the merger will not help them either. It\'s like N Say\'s T-shirt says there\'s too many right-wing Christians and not enough lions. (love that by the way).

They want the conservative vote not to be split. That\'s why they\'re merging.

\'Democracy is about the will of the majority\' quote from above. That is the basis of democracy, but how can the people willingly support something that they haven\'t been told? There are so many secret deals going on, how can anyone really know what they are supporting, look at FTA, Mulroney sold us into that project, even though the majority of Canadians were against it, the people involved with the deal,(suppose to represent us) admit that they didn\'t even read the whole deal. The Chretien gov were elected in part because they were going to review and rescind the free trade, they got elected but did they even look at it. Democracy is suppose to be the will of the majority, but without the truth, what really is the will? If you ask me if I want dessert with my meal, does that mean I want any dessert, all dessert? Specifics would really help people to make decisions, what exactly am I voting for or against? Do the people involved with this merger really know, after all they believed Mr.Mckay at the convention when he said no merger, so what should they believe now?

Since David Orchard is anti-NAFTA, which I agree with, perhaps he and his followers could be persuaded to join CAP, who are also against NAFTA.

We need numbers, and right now, I don\'t care where they come from.

Democracy was not demonstrated with this farce of a merger. First, McKay betrayed Orchard and his supporters when he agreed to this merger. Then the PC`s allowed Alliance members to take up membership so that they can vote for the merger. It`s like rigging an election! As it is sad to see the founding party in Canada trashed, like so many other proud Canadian traditions trashed by soulless politicians and greed mongers, the only consolation from this is that it is a political suicide. The PC`s are doomed because Mulroney and his supporting cast ruined the party by selling out the country, and the American Alliance are just too much of a bunch of right wing bible thumpin`, Bush lovin`, cousin kissin`, Canada dissin`, health care killin`, social program grillin`, gay hatin`, poverty creatin`, NEANDERTHALS!

Wouldn\'t it be great if Mulroney took a run at the leadership of the NEW Conservatives ?

Would you put it past his chin--I mean ego..?

As Mulroney said, if he ran again, his motto would be \"Give youth a chance!\" (heh -he\'s 63, Chretien was 59 10 years ago, and Paul Martin is 65 now!)

....That being said, Mel Hurtig is 70, so....well, you know. Ralph Nader isn\'t so bad, either.
