State Department's Shannon Addresses "Why The Americas Matter"

Posted on Thursday, September 21 at 10:24 by 4Canada
"[W]e live in a hemisphere that is democratic, a hemisphere that is committed to free markets, that is committed to economic integration," said Shannon. "From my point of view, in many ways this hemisphere has already gone through what we would call the first generation of transformational challenges by committing itself to democracy, by committing itself to fundamental human rights, and by building a consensus -- however debated it is, ... it's still a consensus -- around an economic model and an approach to economic growth." http://usinfo.state.gov/xarchives/display.html?p=washfile-english&y=2006&m=September&x=20060920153623GLnesnoM0.1765406 [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on September 22, 2006]

"... I think that the Americas still has the capacity to show the rest of the world some profound and important lessons in governance and in how you protect individual liberties but operate successfully in a globalized economy.

    Why don't I stop there."

The only reason why the US has such a hard on for "spreading democracy" is that under that form of colonial rule the US reaps all the benefits and the governments of the new "democracies" take all the heat for the country going to hell in a handbasket.

I'm sure we in North America would be a whole lot safer if our respective governments (and the corporations who in the end both back and benefit from said governments and their policies) stayed the hell out of the affairs of other nations.

George Washington had it right when he said "avoid foreign wars".

Too bad more of our "leaders" can't be bothered to learn from their distant predeceasors.
