Layton Says Liberal Weakness Gives Harper Majority

He said Canadians should not be impressed with Liberals for allowing the throne speech to pass — even though it rejects the Kyoto accord and suggests Canada should stay the course in Afghanistan until 2011.

...

Mr. Layton said his party has systematically opposed the Tories in confidence votes and will continue to do so. But he pointed out that Mr. Harper can control Parliament if only one party supports him or abstains from voting.

“What effectively has happened is the gift of a majority government has been given by that party (the Liberals) to Mr. Harper.”

“It's going to be very symbolic to watch our members rise in the House — willing to put their jobs, their principles, their commitments on the line — and then to watch the official opposition sit it out.”

Darn good thing we've got a healthy functioning democracy going on here, otherwise Harper would be an unopposed dictator.

I think what's really going on is that the Libs and Cons are trying to figure out a way they can merge. After all, in their de facto "governance", both are nearly identical in the results.................

It's not like it hasn't happened in history before. Canadian parties uniting to be a majority. Perhaps Harper feels too strong to join with Dion and form the LibCon party. We can only hope that voters will not stand for it, again.

    That's not a bad idea.

Merge together "lib" and "con", rearrange the letters and toss out the "i" and "n", and you get "bloc". With this simple merger and name change they could run the whole show with nothing in the way but the puny forces of the NDP!
