From the Kelowna Capital News: (http://www.kelownacapnews.com/) Rally against trade talks held Sunday http://www.kelownacapnews.com/portals-code/list.cgi?paper=113&cat=23&id=1046963&more=0 Aug 17 2007 What is being called a Security and Prosperity Partnership meeting between the leaders of Canada, U.S. and Mexico in Montebello, Que., on Aug. 20-21 may seem like an issue that’s a long way from Kelowna. But critics of the potential sovereignty being discarded in favour of a North American Union economic agreement, feel it’s an issue local residents need to understand. To that end, a public rally is planned for Sunday, 2 p.m., at Kerry Park. “We are protesting the integration of trade regulations and security regulations between Mexico, the U.S. and Canada,” said organizer Dan Merchant. He cited one potential setback is an increase in the use of pesticides on Canada’s fruit and vegetable crops, which a North American Union agreement could allow, superceding any desire by Canadians to otherwise see a reduction. Merchant and his like-minded protesters will be handing out information about the issues they feel are at stake as trade barriers between countries continue to become more seemless. “Our main objective is to get people informed and interested in what is going on in Canada regarding the SPP (Security and Prosperty Partnership) and the NAU (North American Union),” Merchant said.
