Virtue Police Remove Women At Canadian Education Booths

Foreign Affairs spokesman Bernard Nguyen said he was waiting to hear details of the incident that took place last Wednesday. But the Canadian embassy in Saudi Arabia put out a statement over the weekend, protesting against the actions of authorities in the region. “Such unprofessional incidents are very damaging to Saudi Arabia's international reputation,” the embassy said. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070507.wvice0507/BNStory/International/home [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on May 9, 2007]

“From what I hear … the religious police were very rude. They shouted at them in a way that was disrespectful and they shut down the booth, the Canadian embassy booth as well as the LaSalle College booth,” Mr. Chrysomilides said in an interview Monday.

This is called "blowback" for attacking Muslim nations and siding with the US of Israel's horrific policies.

More likely, this is what you get with Shiara Law. Women don't have to be Canadian to get this sort of treatment.

Funny how you're always pointing out all the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi, but yet that act and this action by the Saudi "Virtue Police" are somehow our fault.

(I'll reply to your "kids out of soldiering" comment when I have more time . . )

"More likely, this is what you get with Shiara Law. Women don't have to be Canadian to get this sort of treatment."

Not so long ago women in Canada were treated poorly and we had to find our own way out of it. Do you expect every culture on earth to be just as "civilized" as us? Saudi Arabia is not our country and does not subscribe to our customs. We don't expect them to impose their will on us, and I have to assume that they don't expect us to impose our will on them.

"Funny how you're always pointing out all the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi"

I have done no such thing. In fact I have no idea if the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi, I don't even know if there were hijackers on board (may have been remote control). With the exception of some aspects of the operation, no one knows for sure how all aspects of the operation was carried out, and we're still waiting for a real criminal investigation into the matter that can find out.

"this action by the Saudi 'Virtue Police' are somehow our fault."

It is a basic principle of civility that when you behave poorly towards others, you'll get back the same treatment.

Canada is teamed up with the USA and its idiotic "war on terror". Through the use of military force, Canada is in Afghanistan helping to impose the will of the US installed puppet regime. Afghanistan is a predominantly Muslim culture and I find it reasonable to assume that most Muslims (and many non-Muslims) throughout the world do not agree with the invasion. In addition, the Canadian government has been siding with Israel despite that country committing various atrocities in both Lebanon and Palestine.

We were warned about the consequences of taking sides with Israel, and with taking part in the USA's nonsense war in Afghanistan, now we have to live with it.

Actually I see this story as a very good caution for us; virtue police seems to
be very much accepted in Saudi, and perhaps this event will help to make us
more aware of what living in a free, democratic nation should look like; we
are not that far different, prevention of freedom of speech, or limiting our
    ability to come
and go as we please is not something we accept, but it is very very possible,
and is happening to some extent already. I realize that this event highlights
women as the target, but any group of people can be made inferior if we do
not stand up for each other. It has happened historically to women in various
cultures, but it happens to people everywhere, only a group endorsed by the
'elite' can speak, or move freely in that kind of society. We need to see these
events for what they are. Saudi has a society that accepts this behaviour,
Canadians do not but unless we are vigilant at home and set a true example
of equality, we will see it erode.

I see this event as prophetic, and history repeating itself.
Any society that allows certain groups to be seen as superior and others
inferior is not a humane or free society. imo

Then again, it is their country and all visitors to it have to abide by their their laws.

To expect to be allowed to do otherwise is just plain foolishness.

Of course not. It's their country, let them do as they please. My point is that these 'customs' are being brought here, and demanded of us that we bow to their culture.

    I will not.

"In fact I have no idea if the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi"

No, true enough. I had you confused again. My bad.

"It is a basic principle of civility that when you behave poorly towards others, you'll get back the same treatment."

Precicely. Torture is abhorrent. So the Kingdom of Saud gets no respect from me after torturing our citizens. (Long before Afghanistan too, BTW). Using your own logic, you should feel similar to me.

Ahhh! The meat of the meal! What is done to one Muslim is done to all Muslims! The Taliban Rights association should remember this. You may fight for their right to kill us and our families, but they will kill you as an infidel just the same.
