Layton Plays The Anti-Yankee Card

Posted on Wednesday, January 28 at 12:53 by Anonymous
This explains his conversations with Sheila Copps who, when she was a Liberal leadership candidate, made no bones about her anti-American cultural nationalism and her full-throated opposition to Canadian co-operation with the United States on missile defence. Now that Copps is facing an uphill fight for the Liberal nomination in her own Hamilton riding, she might well be persuaded to jump ship and join the anti-American, anti-BMD New Democratic Party.

Its not Layton playing the anti-yankee card its the pro-cheap labour conservative American Post playing the anti-Canadian card.

They have bought lock stock and barrel the arguement that any thought no matter how rational in regards to America is \'anti-american\'. They know this will play well to the cheap labour conservative crowd.

this cracks me up... makes me think of the Soviet Union or Brazil under the generals where people who criticised government polocy were \"anti-Soviet\" or \"anti-Brazilian\" which was a terrible crime.

\"Only in the United States is there a concept like \'anti-Americanism\'. The concept of anti-Italian, or anti-Spanish would be a joke!... In fact, among anyone who takes democracy seriously, the concept comes straight out of a lexicon of totalitarianism.\" - Chomsky

ie people who equate the policies of the government with the country itself have heavy-duty totalitarian mindsets. Layton wants what\'s best for the country, so if he\'s anything, he\'s pro-Canadian, if there is such a thing.

Granastein is an extreme right-winger. In his book, \"Who Killed Canada History?\", he actually justified the internment of Japanese-Canadians in WWII. That\'s right, Granastein\'s an apologist for interment, which gives him a spot in hell just above that of Ernst Zundel.

I would like to challenge anyone here to write a letter to the editor of the National Post in resposne to this article.

This anti-american label is really starting to get on my nerves. While this guy can claim Jack Layton as anti-american, Jack Layton probably has American friends. This guy has just ruined his credibility and he doesn\'t even know it.

    Fabrications, anyone?

I enjoyed how he called Copps, Graham and Axworthy \"Mationalists.\" Barely. Maybe John Godfrey, but I don\'t think we know what to expect. No one, including Copps --said much to criticize Chretien, Martin -to avoid party discipline. John Nunziata did regarding the GST, and.........well you know. He\'s MP no more....and he sucked in the mayor\'s race, the phoney.

We can\'t be too harsh on some Liberals, though, as they can\'t do anything with King Tutt as boss.

Layton stands way above these guys, but I must say it seems that L.Axworthy has written some interesting things since he is no longer in parliament, perhaps he like Chretien have decided the price is too high? But Granatstein, has been bashing Canada for awhile, no surprise here, it\'s just that he was suppose to have pledged his allegiance to Canada, many years ago, when he enlisted in the military. Guess that sounds stupid, since all our politicians should have done that!

Anyone suggesting that we be pro-American right now is anti-American themselves. My God, this is not the America anyone in their right mind would want to support. So yes, I am suggesting that Mr. Granatstein along with many other I-hate-that-I\'m-Canadian people need their heads examined. I\'m proud to be anti-American as it stands because this is not the America I can love and support.

And since when is being a love-Canada automatically making you an anti-America? That\'s asking us to BE American. So far, I believe there are still rather a good number of us that want to remain Canadian and will probably go down fighting to remain Canadian.

I would love to see a article in the Toronto Star now explaining the opposite regarding Jack Layton and his \'pro-canadian\' ideals. And his independent Canada ideals. I wish someone would challenge this guy\'s anti-american remarks towards Jack Layton. It upsets me that someone can make comments like this without the other person being able to defend himself.

That\'s why I believe there should be rules with articles like this. If your going to talk about another person, have that person have a article responding so the readers can have both sides of the story and then they can decide.

Well Granatstein might suggest that his article was the other side of Jack\'s advertisement. You know Kevin you might want to get someone from the NDP to respond to Jack, I think you are trying to get someone here to take the challenge, which is good; I am not sure that a non-member of the NDP would be right to defend Jack Layton. But a letter to the editor just declaring the other side of the argument might be a good idea?

I read Granatstein`s book \"Who Killed Canadian History\" as well. Now, I agree that Canadian history is being assassinated, but Granatstein tries to make himself out to be some sort of defender of Canada. Yet most of his writings slant toward the notion that Canadian nationalism survives alone on America bashing. I don`t know, I think Canadians would love to share a border with the USA if relations were truly friendly and not one sided in favour of the US. My mind goes back to the days when Trudeau was PM and Jimmy Carter was president. Those two had good relations! Carter respected Canada and her sovereign decisions. Carter often called Trudeau for advice on foreign countries. Unfortunately, Reagan picked up, and amplified, where Nixon left off.

Perhaps the author of this article is not willing to have any feedback, he didn\'t publish his email address for a reply or comment.

He may well have his email address in the newspaper, but I don\'t buy it.

If anyone knows his email address, please post it so I can reply to this article.

He\'s such a bonehead, he\'s with mulroney and harris. And Klein. And Martin. And Harper and Stronach.

This guy should move to the US, he doesn\'t like it here.

Ok Kevin, I took the bait, reread the article and was just as peeved as you. So I sent a letter to the editor of the National post, Granatstein\'s address isn\'t there but you can always ask the National Post to forward your letter, that would be interesting.

So I will submit a copy to vive and you can read it if they post it. Thanks for the encouragement Kevin.
    I really don\'t like that word , anti-American in lieu of pro-Canadian!

I have written the editor with sentiments similar to the ones I\'ve posted here already.

Mr. Granastein is the chair of the Council for Canadian Security in the 21st Century. Their web is www.ccs21.org.

It sounds like maybe a bunch of old, retired military types are going to be, or have already, written a \"white paper\" (toilet paper?) with ways Canada needs to protect itself in the 21st Century. Glory Be! They\'re just the people I want making plans for the military future. It\'s all a game for them.

I\'m still convinced that if we built about 4 big neuclear bombs, set them up facing the U.S. that all of a sudden we\'d have found our voice. If these people want us to go the way of the U.S. - this is their way. Let\'s do it.
