Hezbollah and Hamas are terrorist groups. But Iran remains an unflinching supporter, citing the right to resist occupation.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's stupid statements denying the Holocaust and vowing to wipe Israel off the map are only the latest salvos in this long war.
This backdrop has been central to the U.S. campaign on the nuclear issue, as Condoleezza Rice made clear last Thursday:
"We may face no greater challenge from a single country than from Iran, whose policies are directed at developing a Middle East that would be 180 degrees different than the Middle East we would like to see developed."
She said Iran is not only the "central banker for terrorism" but is also blocking democracy in the region. In fact, Iran welcomed elections in Lebanon, Iraq and the Occupied Territories, where its surrogates won, much to the chagrin of the U.S.
Now that Rice has officially identified Iran as America's biggest adversary in the region, the clerics in Tehran are happy to wear the badge with honour.
With Dick Cheney threatening Iran with "meaningful consequences," the clerics responded right back that the U.S., too, is "susceptible to harm and pain. So ... let the ball roll."
