Anon, I'm not sure you speak on behalf of all Canadians.

If Canadians had the values they claim to have, they'd openly welcome people like this.

I say we ACCEPT them! I`m for supporting their cause. These guys are smart enough to know that the war in Iraq is about grabbing Iraqi oil and punishing Saddam for switching to the Euro for buying and selling goods. It would be different if this war was about another Hitler threatening world peace and freedom!

Initially, I would have said No.<p> But some well pointed <a href='http://www.vivelecanada.ca/article.php?story=20040221170913741'>arguments</a> by Flick and C# have convinced me otherwise. If their country dismisses their objections, where it has allowed such objections in the past, they need a place from which to voice their opinions.<p><p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />

won't matter if they come to canada, because canada will soon join the americans and start a conscription, the best place is leave north america...within a couple of years we here in canada will be in the same situation as the US...bottom line....we will all have to make a choice soon, do we go along with the present fascist governments or say no.....they are coming for your children to use as cannon folder....

I say to let 'em in. They didn't sign up to fight in an illegal war, so they owe nothing to the US government. It would also send a message to Washington that actions such as unilaterally invading a sovereign state has far-reaching repercussions. Besides we got some pretty decent new citizens as a result of Vietnam, maybe we can pick a few more this time around.

Yes. I will offer my home as a refuge if need be.

I can remember being a teen. I personally would never of let someone talk me into something like joining the military yet there were many kids that would have taken that option rather than stay where they were. Hopefully as we evolve as a species less and less young people will choose to give their bodies to such a useless way of handling conflict. I can't believe we're not there yet.

You know what I love best about this discussion, is that we can express our points of view, discuss various experiences, debate the points and still remain friendly. Somewhere along the line we can even find a small point that perhaps someone missed. It is a real statement about the benefits of discussing such an issue, if we could only have this type of information in the House of Commons?

I also agree with the statement above that this just might help send a message to the warmongers that although they may have a taste for blood, the majority of people in the world do not, no matter what colour the skin is of the ones bleeding! If you listen to the reports you hear so much about the death of U.S. soldiers and very little about the people defending their nation; and it seems to me that the people of Iraq, do believe that is what they are doing.

Amen. We ought to be thankfull that there aren't a lot of Canadians caught in the present quagmire. And we ought to welcome those Americans that decline to participate in Bush's folly. We could view it as positive reenforcement of sane behaviour.

    Can Canada legally deny them?

We're members of the international criminal court (unlike the U.S.A.) I wonder if Canada could be sued if we sent these guys back to be prosecuted for not participating in an illegal war.

These chaps deserted their unit, which, last time I checked is a punishable crime in any military. I don't know if it's a good thing to let them stay.
