Who Will Fight To Save Medicare?

Who will stand up and fight for medicare?

It's a simple question, but one that goes to the very heart of what Canada stands for, of what makes this country unique and, ultimately, what will make this country great in the future.

Also, the fight to preserve ? or, ideally, to strengthen ? our publicly funded, universal health-care program that once was the envy of the world will likely be a key issue in the coming federal election.

All three national parties ? the Liberals, Conservatives, and New Democrats ?all insist they are the true defenders of health care, that their approach will provide the best route to provide efficient, sustainable world-class medical care in the decades to come.

The writer thinks the NDP has zero chance of winning the next election yet they are the only one of the four top parties that would save health care. The Liberals and the Conservatives have both said they would go to privatization (P3's- private public partnerships). It doesn't matter what Martin says because he is a con man, if he wanted to he could draft and pass legislation that would outlaw P3's but he won't do that. Paul Martin is as reliable as Stephen Harper and I don't feel comfortable with either of these devils. So let's get the NDP elected and let's publicise as much as possible that Martin and Harper are each one half of the ruling classes divide and conquer strategy. Both the Liberal and Conservative parties have sold out to the new Rome which is now called Washington, DC..

The NDP is not going to form the government-ever. It would be nice, but it's not realistically possible IMHO. BUT, a minority government is a very distinct possibility this time around and would be a marvellous result for Canadians. Liberals would actually have begin to implement policies ordinary citizens, not bay street lackies, want.

I agree Anon. It does seems that the realistically the NDP will not form a government. I think the positive outlook for the NDP is trying to get more support then the conservatives overall, or at least in provinces.

In a recent poll the NDP overall has 18% and the conservatives have 23%. In B.C the NDP has 26%, while the conservatives have 25%. In Saskatchewan and Manitoba the NDP has 25%, while the conservatives have 26%. In Quebec their tied with 8%. As for the other provinces not mentioned, the NDP is trailing by a large margin.

But from these poll's the NDP has some chances of beating the conservatives in some provinces, and hopefully beating them overall and getting more seats then them. Will have to wait and see. Anything can happen between now and then.

I don't agree that NDP can't or won't form the government, these other two parties are creating enough revealing moments that Canadians will be forced to look elsewhere and after Harper spends his budget in his pre-election advertising and Martin keeps sucking up to our neighbors, the NDP is going to look like the party of Tommy Douglas and more, save Universal Health Care, stop the flags of convenience, stop the Missile Defence...I think they have a pretty good chance of swaying a lot of undecideds as well as some former liberals and conservatives!

    Whelan Costan,

I agree, we can't just give up. Besides there's almost as many people not voting as there are voting aren't there? If everyone got out to vote and they saw the NDP as a viable option - Voila, Vive le Canada et le NDP! (I'm sorry, my written French is pitiful, I hope that's right?)

Anything is possible in this universe! If enough people are disenchanted with the two other corporate fascist parties, then it looks good for the NDP. Ultimately, it is up to us to save medicare! Country wide general strike if need be!
